Women's Locker Room

Here's a thread for the ladies to discuss anything that relates to women and swimming. For example, feel free to discuss how disgustingly ugly fastskins are, how the "curse" can kill a meet, how suits don't fit, how swimming wrecks your hair, how hormones unhinge you, etc.
  • Some questions for the ladies: 1. Is everyone wearing their wedding/engagement ring(s) during practice or meets? 2. Anyone tried oil of oregano for congestion? A friend recommended this to me recently. 3. Anyone had a nagging hip injury? Dr. Jimby says these can take awhile to fix. Mine's been dragging on for almost 4 weeks now. I think I hurt it with over stretching and hard kicking, but I'm not sure. 4. Anyone tried any of the new speed suits: Xterra or Renegade by AquaZone? I was wondering if they fit better than the B70. There seems to be a lot of women who have trouble getting the B70 up high enough in the crotch. Maybe the thigh area is too small? 5. For chicks that are lifting, if you take time off from weights, does it take awhile to get back to your previous level? I have this notion that it takes women longer to build muscle and that we can lose it more easily ... but this could be false. I take off my wedding/engagement ring and the ring that I wear on my right hand as well. I had several settings break and I almost lost my diamond several times before I was told that chlorine eats at gold and white gold. Since then, no problems with the setting. I keep the 2nd wedding band on, though. Sorry, I have never tried oregano. How would you take it? Nor have I had a nagging hip injury. I haven't tried any of the newer tech suits. Mine is still circa 1996 :) When I take time off, it takes me about 2-3 weeks to feel back to where I was. I think the average person loses the muscle in 2 weeks. Or so I have been told. Not sure if that is different for women or not.

Sounds like something to put on a sandwich. I much prefer Aleve-D for congestion. 3. no help here 4. I have an Xterra. Used it for two meets now. I like it, but no more or less than the B70. My new B70 is a size smaller than before, but I've not tried it out in a meet yet. I'm saving it for zones. The Xterra fits higher in the neck area, and it does not have any non-coated surfaces (like the B70 has on the front). I have not found it to be faster or slower than the B70. I've had fast swims in both, and average swims in both. Despite the hype, neither suit caused me to drop time just by putting it on. I still had to work very hard for the fast swims and even harder for some of the average swims. 5. Liftig has been non-existent lately, but in the past it hasn't taken long to get back what had been lost. Most of the pain came from getting the body used to the pain again.

Nope, never heard of it 3. No nagging hip injury, just a nagging shoulder injury on top of bad knees 4. Nope 5. I stopped lifting for a while due to my shoulder. I started back seriously again at the first of the year, and it doesn't seem to be taking me long to get back to where I was at
  • I always wear my wedding ring (plain gold band) and a ring on my right hand that says "geek" (a present from my brother - such a sweet guy). No engagement ring for me. I couldn't take either of those rings off if I wanted to - they haven't fit over my knuckles in years...I'll probably be buried in them! I do wear two diamond studs in my left ear and they have also been there for years...knock wood I can't help with any of the other stuff - sorry
  • I ALWAYS wear both my engagement ring (diamond solitaire) and wedding ring (band with channel set diamonds) in the pool. I swim at lunch now and I'd rather risk them falling off at the bottom of the pool than in a locker at the Y, kwim? I've always worn them though. I even wear them during open-water swims.

I think I'd lose mine too if I took them off and on. That's what happens periodically with sunglasses ... I haven't been wearing mine at all. I'm in the pool so frequently. At meets, I'm worried they'll tear my suit. I think hubby wonders about it though ... Feisty: I'm told you use the oil or oregano at the very beginning of a cold, 3-4 x a day 3-4 drops under the tongue. Haven't tried it yet myself, as I've astonishingly been fairly cold free all winter. Now I've probably jinxed myself.
  • I wish I had heard about that cold remedy sooner. I had a nasty cold that sidelined me all last week. Couldn't breathe even sitting. I wore my rings once, they bothered me so much that I started taking them off for swimming. I leave them at home. Maybe it was more for the reason that I think that my husband would cry like a little baby if I told him that I lost a small fortune at the bottom of the pool or a locker room. On the tech suits, I am trying to figure out which size to get. I sent my measurements to speedo customer service and their response is to go to a store and try one on. It was funny to read "We do not sell any suits that fit your measurements"--are you serious?

I've heard apple cider vinegar helps too. But who knows with these herbal remedies? I think the neti pot is the most help. Yeah, Speedo is so helpful. It's probably easiest to try it on at a store. Or, order two sizes on the internet, keep the one that fits best and return the other one.

I try to remember to take off my engagement ring since I lost the diamond on the kitchen floor (found it and reset it) and the jeweler explained that chems in pools eat away metal over time. And my wedding ring is big (was my grandmother's) so it comes off as well. My new engagement ring setting is much stronger too - not a classic prong setting. I find I am back to lifting my normal weight level after 2 weeks if I was just off 2 to 3 weeks. It takes longer if I am off longer. I lose muscle more slowly if I am swimming. If I am just off on vacation it takes longer to come back. --mj
