Grudge Races, Part 2

Blackbeard/Muppet/Jeff is hosting the Terrapin Cup on July 1. There will be at least one grudge race. Others can join in. Grudge Race #1: Blackbeard/Muppet vs. Fortress in the 50 meter fly LC Handicap: Blackbeard gives Fort 2 seconds, one for each decade. (Blackbeard 25-29; Fort 45-49) Fur: Blackbeard goes full fur. Fort wears a worn out Fastskin II. Blackbeard profile: Been training like a demon. Just swam the 4.4 mile bay swim in an hour and half. Recently developed a hankering for the 50 fly. May hurt himself in advance playing hockey. May be distracted hosting the meet and making sure everything runs well. May still be drinking too much tequila after Dave Barra paid up from grudge race, part 1. Has home field advantage and endurance advantage. Fort profile: Sketchy training. Sketchy left shoulder. Monofin injury. But won't be swimming any distance free beforehand. Could suffer mommy guilt from skipping Mini-Fort's meet that morning. Likely will not have much sleep the night before. Will compensate with caffeine or guzzle red bulls like Jim Clemmons. Cruise will likely note that there is a risk that Fort will skip the meet and go shopping. Place your bets or join in. (Julie: I'll take you on too in that 50 back again if you want. But I'm assuming without my SDK edge in LC, I'd get smoked.)

Kevin--I hate to give unsolicited advice but just incase you're a rookie to back pains: I suggest rolling a towel or sweatshirt up and putting it in the small of your back...it might feel a little odd at first...try relaxing on the floor with said "cushion" first before trying to sleep. Do some stretching (duh) and try pressing up from the waist only (lying on your front ). Keep your hips on the floor, go slow and don't press beyond if/where you feel pain. Let the back do the work. Ice is your friend. Thanks stud. I've hurt my back before and this feels way different. This started out feeling like my kidneys hurt (or at least that general area) and its been getting progressively worse to the point of my back feeling like it was cramping up at the base of my ribs. And it only happens at night. During the day I'm fine. My doctor's appointment is in an hour, so I hope he can shed some light on this. And more importantly avoid a repeat of last night. Kevin

Woa! I don't remember 50s ever hurting. They're over too fast.
  • You have a heating pad? I had some bad back pain in March and with lots of Advil LiquiGels, would keep the pad on there as much as I could. Seemed to work ok.
  • As for the 50s themselves, they're a breeze. It's just strength, technique and execution. Sometimes you execute, sometimes not. There's no time for pain, unless Julie is referring to the psychic pain. :joker: Although when you're old, you're pretty sore the next day from the all out sprinting. Remember, Jules, I'm not the only one who said to do speedwork. :laugh2:;)! I have to disagree. Sprints can be painful. Painful to work that hard only to see real sprinters pass you by. Painful to have an 11 year old pass me during practice yesterday. Pain... pain...pain!! Kevin, hope the back is better. What did the doc say? Julie, hope to meet you at the sprint tri. Kristina, coming up in Aug is the Women's Tri in Acworth. It's a good sprint one www.gamultisports.com/index.html. My mom and dad volunteer for the guy who owns this company so they will be there working. Alison

Kevin, hope the back is better. What did the doc say? He said its not stones as far as he can tell (from a urine test). He thinks they are muscle spasms and prescribed something to help me sleep and to call him if it doesn't get better with in a week and so he can run more tests. Kevin

I'm not going to say Muppet is wrong, whatever works for the individual. I would go heat to relax and then ice to reduce inflammation. I used to hottub and feel great but wake up feeling even more stiff and immobile. When I use ice after heat that problem goes away. I also use ice outright--so please try both.

Stud, are you getting in the pool and doing some easy swimming with your back or are you just resting it? Kevin Kevin My back issues relate to 3 bad discs and tight hamstrings...through swimming the impact of spasms has really been redueced to minor strain/tightness. It's tough to say what to do until you know what's going on. Heat, stretch, and then ice is probably a safe thing to do. I've found that I can swim with my back spasm and it's relaxing b/c the water does more to support you an let some muscles relax. If you're in painful spasm don't swim hard. My back went Friday AM. I still went into the theme park and had a good day without too much pain...only felt my back upon rising out of a chair. By Sunday I was fine. Before swimming I'd be down for a day and then hobbling for a week. Go swim and feel yourself...if it hurts stop (I know, "duh!") if not keep going...I used bad back time to work on lenthening the stroke rather than speed. I avoid flips when back is tight too.

Everyone I know with a bad back flare up or spasms, including Mr. Fort and friends, is usually given a steroid pack. Is Mr Fort governor of California...I mean all this "open endorsement" of steroid use.... ;)

Spasms may reflect inflammation. Heat makes inflammation worse. Hot tubs or heat feels great temporarily. But ice is the best for inflammation. And steroids. Everyone I know with a bad back flare up or spasms, including Mr. Fort and friends, is usually given a steroid pack. I hope you're OK! I wish your doc had had something more specific to say. If it gets worse, go back as planned or get a second opinion. Seems like you need some more specific advice. Don't know about the location of pain ... That's different. But it could be impingement or a herniated disc or something. Don't mess around with it!
