Grudge Races, Part 2

Blackbeard/Muppet/Jeff is hosting the Terrapin Cup on July 1. There will be at least one grudge race. Others can join in. Grudge Race #1: Blackbeard/Muppet vs. Fortress in the 50 meter fly LC Handicap: Blackbeard gives Fort 2 seconds, one for each decade. (Blackbeard 25-29; Fort 45-49) Fur: Blackbeard goes full fur. Fort wears a worn out Fastskin II. Blackbeard profile: Been training like a demon. Just swam the 4.4 mile bay swim in an hour and half. Recently developed a hankering for the 50 fly. May hurt himself in advance playing hockey. May be distracted hosting the meet and making sure everything runs well. May still be drinking too much tequila after Dave Barra paid up from grudge race, part 1. Has home field advantage and endurance advantage. Fort profile: Sketchy training. Sketchy left shoulder. Monofin injury. But won't be swimming any distance free beforehand. Could suffer mommy guilt from skipping Mini-Fort's meet that morning. Likely will not have much sleep the night before. Will compensate with caffeine or guzzle red bulls like Jim Clemmons. Cruise will likely note that there is a risk that Fort will skip the meet and go shopping. Place your bets or join in. (Julie: I'll take you on too in that 50 back again if you want. But I'm assuming without my SDK edge in LC, I'd get smoked.)
  • Is Mr Fort governor of California...I mean all this "open endorsement" of steroid use.... ;) I've seen Mr. Fort with the exact same symptoms as Kevin. It's no fun to crawl on the floor. Muscle relaxers don't do jack for him either. The only thing that eases the pain and spasming is a steroid pack. And where exactly did you think I was getting my massive shoulders for fly anyway?

Yeah I wish there was something more specific. In the mean time, I'm definitely doing some stretching and then ice/heat in the evenings. And I'm taking ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer before bed as my doc recommended/prescribed. But so far that has just taken the edge off of the pain. I don't think it is getting any better, yet. Stud, are you getting in the pool and doing some easy swimming with your back or are you just resting it? Kevin

In my experience the best remedy for back pain is movement. About once a year I get a back pain attack that nearly immobilizes me and I wind up crawling around the house for a day or so. The more I force myself to walk, regadless of how hunched over and awkward it might be, the sooner I get better. I have been down the MD path getting muscle relaxers and that proved completely useless. I also tried visiting a chiropractor and that visit scared me half to death...won't be going again. Best of luck to you.

I went ahead and swam last night. Here was the work out. It was a bit more than I wanted to do but went anyway figuring I could get out early if things didn't feel right. Long course meters - Less turns and probably better on my back. 600 warm up Every 3rd non free. I did EZ backstroke. 3 rounds straight through 2 X 100 on 1:40 Desc. 1-2 2 X 50 Kick on 1:30 Desc. 1-2 (kicking was tough and I could feel back back tighten up so I took it easy and mixed in breaststroke. Good thing for the 1:30 interval! Main set. 6 X 150 on 2:40 100 easy 4 X 150 on 2:30 100 Easy 2 X 150 on 2:20 100 easy I pretty much kept the same pace for all of the 150's. A smooth 1:58-2:00. Although the last two I went a little bit faster. 200 warm down. I felt little stiff when I was done so I jumped in the jacuzzi and then iced it at home. The best thing is that I felt better at night. Still had to loosen up my back so I could get out of bed to use the restroom but it took less time and I felt like I got a better nights sleep. So hopefully this means I'm on the road to recovery. Tonights work out is 4000 yards and short course with some sprints at the end. I'll have to be smart about this one.

Well at the Wilton sizzler...Some_Girl and I had to settle for consecutive heats...whiles I just edged my fair opponent in the 50 FR...she whomped me in the 50 FLY...but more importantly we all got to eat at the BBQ afterwards!!

She is the reigning queen of fly... :dedhorse: hoo-ray for barbecue!
  • ...now she got a hat to prove it too ...we need a picture of you wearing the crown SG!!! Yeah, I'll have to look into that. Though considering the disaster that was my 100 fly at that meet, I am not sure I deserve it. Plus the fact that I am one of the slowest girls on my team (of those who regularly race) means I'd feel pretty silly wearing it to practice.

Maybe you should come redeem yourself at zones. :wine: The way Fort dies in the 100s, you may actually have a decent bet there too!
  • Any challengers here. video.msn.com/.../v.htm What's the challenge? Swim in colder water, or swim farther than he did? Not that I'd be up for either of these challenges... P.S. It's water and not ice at 29 degrees F because it's salt water.
