Grudge Races, Part 2

Blackbeard/Muppet/Jeff is hosting the Terrapin Cup on July 1. There will be at least one grudge race. Others can join in. Grudge Race #1: Blackbeard/Muppet vs. Fortress in the 50 meter fly LC Handicap: Blackbeard gives Fort 2 seconds, one for each decade. (Blackbeard 25-29; Fort 45-49) Fur: Blackbeard goes full fur. Fort wears a worn out Fastskin II. Blackbeard profile: Been training like a demon. Just swam the 4.4 mile bay swim in an hour and half. Recently developed a hankering for the 50 fly. May hurt himself in advance playing hockey. May be distracted hosting the meet and making sure everything runs well. May still be drinking too much tequila after Dave Barra paid up from grudge race, part 1. Has home field advantage and endurance advantage. Fort profile: Sketchy training. Sketchy left shoulder. Monofin injury. But won't be swimming any distance free beforehand. Could suffer mommy guilt from skipping Mini-Fort's meet that morning. Likely will not have much sleep the night before. Will compensate with caffeine or guzzle red bulls like Jim Clemmons. Cruise will likely note that there is a risk that Fort will skip the meet and go shopping. Place your bets or join in. (Julie: I'll take you on too in that 50 back again if you want. But I'm assuming without my SDK edge in LC, I'd get smoked.)

  • I'm not going to say Muppet is wrong, whatever works for the individual. I would go heat to relax and then ice to reduce inflammation. I used to hottub and feel great but wake up feeling even more stiff and immobile. When I use ice after heat that problem goes away. I also use ice outright--so please try both. I'm going with ice. Spasms may reflect inflammation. Heat makes inflammation worse. Hot tubs or heat feels great temporarily. But ice is the best for inflammation. And steroids. Everyone I know with a bad back flare up or spasms, including Mr. Fort and friends, is usually given a steroid pack. I hope you're OK! I wish your doc had had something more specific to say. If it gets worse, go back as planned or get a second opinion. Seems like you need some more specific advice. Don't know about the location of pain ... That's different. But it could be impingement or a herniated disc or something. Don't mess around with it!
