Amanda Beard in Playboy

Swiminfo.com has released a post saying that Amanda Beard will be on the cover of the July issue for Playboy. How do you think this will effect her image among the swimming communties? Will any of us purchase this issue because of her?

I disagree with that blanket statement. If Amanda heads to Beijing and wins gold or sets a new WR I seriously doubt the performance will be marginalized because of the magazines she has appeared in. I suspect there will be a few who discount and/or belittle her achievements in the pool based upon her legal choices out of the pool, but that says more about them than it does about Amanda I think. In the end, a female athlete need not be wholesome to be formiddable. I challenge anybody who does not respect Amanda as a swimmer to race her in the pool. Only then will we see who the truly competent athlete is. I know I have stated this before but lets try to keep in mind that there is nothing illegal here or even remotely groundbreaking. There is no adultery, no violence, no drug use, etc.. I say give the woman a break. Matt, what the article was talking about, wasn't specifically Amanda being objectified....but, women in general when they pose for magazines like Playboy, Penthouse or any other skin mag. And if any man in here tells me he buys these magazines for anything but getting a good look at the women inside.....:blah: :blah: :blah: Put all of the articles and jokes from Playboy in one magazine without the pictures and put it next to the other and see what sells.

I still think that this type of blanket statement is incorrect. I agree with you about why people buy these magazines, but I don't agree that the photos change the way these people are seen in general. Didn't Rachael Ray pose for FHM in some rather suggestive photos? (She did...I've seen them). I don't think that has negatively affected her career. Do you?

Never before have I wished I knew how to log out of a discussion...my email account is on fire from all the replies to this Thread! My memory (brain, not computer) is failing me but someone -recently- had a signature, on the Forums, that could help anyone do just that (how to get out......... ...........Alt F4) BTW, don't do it if you don't know what Alt F4 does.
  • Well, Playboy and such aren't actually my favorite reading/picture-looking mags (hey for "cheesecake guy" pics, I like the covers of Runner's World, which runs a hunky guy pic every other month, but I digress...). But Amanda Beard is an adult, contracting with a legally published magazine, and presumably getting a hefty price for her modeling services. Hard to pay the rent with swimming money.... In any event, I still wish her well in competing. Perhaps rather than look at this as her posing scantily clad, you could think of it as becoming more aerodynamic in the water! :D

Posing in clothes...even if it's not much more than a bathing suit...does not quite compare to being naked.

Barb if they look at my posts they will not find anything bad said. I just hope they don't see me in my new racing suit.  George, I'm with you on this one. I am almost entirely out of swim suits and can't find any here in the states except decorator ones and I hate the one piece racing suits, so now I am deduced to men's boxer underwear and no top. Plan on swimming VERY early in the morning from this point on. So, because I may be swimming topless, will Playboy be interested?

  So, because I may be swimming topless, will Playboy be interested? I've heard that Google Earth along with the Hubble Telescope company are offering Internet subscriptions (with special discounts to USMS'ers). However, the rate goes up if you do the backstroke.

I haven't and wouldn't watch Borat. I think a woman looks much better and sexier almost undressed than nude. The imagination does the rest. I agree with all your comments here. I haven't seen a Playboy in years, but if memory serve they never really show "every" like the "rude" magazines do. They do tasteful pictures that hint at what's there. I have no plans to buy this issue of PB, the little amount of curiosity doesn't justify the cost. Yes, I would hate to see my little girl do something like this, but I hope she will always have the right to choose, once she is an adult.
  • SS- A U-turn? I don't get it. I'm just back to my smart alecky, light-hearted, easy going, naked-posing self! :lmao: I've only been naked twice in public (at least that I know about!): my bachelorette party, with all swimming friends; and in Ft. Lauderdale for SC Nationals in 1995 on the beach, and in the water, having naked chicken fights after A LOT of Long Island Iced Teas!!! I was in my best shape ever, and didn't care if anybody saw me. Today.... different story! All that being shared, I'd never post my naked body in a magazine, no matter what shape I was in (but especially with the shape I'm in now!!!) :shakeshead: (I still don't think she made a wise choice)
