Swiminfo.com has released a post saying that Amanda Beard will be on the cover of the July issue for Playboy. How do you think this will effect her image among the swimming communties? Will any of us purchase this issue because of her?

So I take it you want your daughters posing for Playboy, George? It wouldn't bother me if mine did. It depends on what the context is for it etc. It's way more tasteful than Britney and Paris' "upskirts" as they get out of limos... I'm more bothered by the sweat pants that say "juicy" across the butt etc. and the fact that they are marketing this to 12 year olds and younger. I banned my daughter from owning them, then someone in my family bought her a pair that said "Pineapple" (after the dance studio in London). I looked at my wife in dismay, that nobody thought about this before sending it to my 9 year old. I let her wear them at dance class only, which is the context that they are suitable for...

I falsley stated I taught it was a we taught. We taught by example eg - I do not smoke, I never tried pot, I never posed nude, I drink sensibly (but not always). Once your children reach the age of 16, how much control do you have over their lifestyle??? If Swimming World has things in it you don't like don't buy it or have it in the house.

OK, question, as I got to thinking (for a change): Why is the Playboy symbol a rabbit (bunny)? Why not some other cute animal, like, say, a beaver? Inquiring minds want to know. Seriously, is there a history? Actually the original mascot for Playboy was to be a stag (in robe, with pipe, holding a drink as I recall). But at the very last moment Hef changed it to a (male) rabbit, don’t recall why though. From there it morphed into the female cocktail waitress Bunny. There is quite a bit of digital ink on this, just try googling or visit this link en.wikipedia.org/.../Playboy_Bunny I skimmed a few of these looking for the stag reference (just in case my memory is playing tricks on me), but no luck. I probably read it somewhere, like one of the Playboy mags I got as a teenager sneaking down to the drug store and trying to look real adult. (I’m sure the cashiers got a good laugh out of that one). A Beaver? :-o But no, I think not, they have flat tails and I much prefer a... uh... well rounded tail. :-D This has been a fairly interesting thread. And it was even somewhat comforting to see some NSR thrashing and bashing going on in this side of the forum again. I reckon that once you get used to something you miss it regardless if you like it or not. At first I did not care if Amanda posed (in any state of dress/undress) for a “nudie” mag, but now I’m in the camp where it seems inappropriate due to the role model thingy. Parents have a tough enough job without having to dance around this sort of stuff. (I’m not a parent, but I like to think that my observation skills are pretty keen.) Of course I’d take nekkid over a DUI any day too. (I had no idea Phelp’s had this. Poof, there goes that bubble.) I reckon her motivation is money and ego. But that’s too easy ‘cause most jocks have huge egos, and who doesn’t want a fat bank account?

I dunno about all this I think there's a double standard that gets reinforced by both sexes. Women are just less obvious with their oggling and leeriness...usually.

We're the kind of parents that my daughter is going to groan and moan about. She's only 6 right now and has no idea. Poor kid.

I blame Swimming news for linking it to swimming. Double standard is the labelling Leslie. Let's be honest if your son was going to be in a men's mag for girls it wouldn't be so "potentially" harmful to him as far as judgements go. What if Amanda was posing in a *** mag...would it be better from a feminist point of view. She's would not be offering herself up for men to objectify ;)

Why? Aren't you tall enough to reach the top racks? (no pun intended. And I mis-typed "pun" and typed "bun" instead -shows how my mind works!-) I'm asking because in Canada these Magazine -in convenience stores and tobacconists, are placed too high for the kids to reach. They're also shrink-wrapped (a new form of "protection".) I think she was offering to buy one for me as a joke, implying that I might be too embarrased to buy one myself. I think I am plenty tall enough...6-0.

OK...I'm braced for the rebuttals...come on! You said you wouldn't share you rebuttals with anyone but Mr Swimr4life... Beth I am sure you feel the same aobut your son not posing nude. Be honest now though who would get the worse stigma? All I know is, if I had the super-body and the interest in it. I'd pose. I'm not famous though. If chicks wanted to dig me and I got $$$ for it...so what? It doesn't mean we're going steady. Maybe I spent to much time on European beaches...but at least we can discuss it with humour. (yes the *** dig was for "Loony Lefty Liberal Leslie the right-on Feminist" hahaha ok don't hurt me Forty!) :)
