Amanda Beard in Playboy

Swiminfo.com has released a post saying that Amanda Beard will be on the cover of the July issue for Playboy. How do you think this will effect her image among the swimming communties? Will any of us purchase this issue because of her?
  • My 16 year old is still "under my control"! If she misbehaves, she definitely has consequences. That is the good thing about cell phones and driving priviledges (no... she doesn't have her own car! She drives my shweeet mini-van! :joker:) ....they can be taken away when needed to drive the point home that yes... mom and dad are still in control!
  • I'm curious. What other choices exactly? During the Olympics they ran a little bio on her that I watched along with my girls. The reporter told the world that she was "no longer a little girl" and showed pictures of her from when she posed in another Playboy type magazine. She was barely covered and definitely had a "come on big boy" look on her face. Not what I want in a swimming role model for my girls.

I think we all agree that were we Amanda's parents we would have preferred to counsel her not to pose. However, as she is in her twenties (as mine are), they tend to do as they choose, after politely (big diff from teenagers) listening to your views. I would try to focus on being there with a net if and when she needed rescuing from her actions, just as I would from any other poor choice. BTW, as a wordsmith of sorts, I agree that 'skank' is a very ugly word that to my mind nuclear bombs the subject.

Other thought, re Swimming World posting the 'news'; think about this: had they not reported this (in a venue many swimming parents read) you might have not had the lead time to discuss the issues and actions of a role model before it becomes an issue on the playground or pool deck.

My avatar feels that I am being needlessly wordy (as usual), he would just devour her and the whole issue would go away.

I have never bought one of these magazines in my life but I am a little tempted to pick this one up. My wife offered to grab one if I was not up to the task. Why? Aren't you tall enough to reach the top racks? (no pun intended. And I mis-typed "pun" and typed "bun" instead -shows how my mind works!-) I'm asking because in Canada these Magazine -in convenience stores and tobacconists, are placed too high for the kids to reach. They're also shrink-wrapped (a new form of "protection".)
  • I don't have that book in my collection can somebody pm me? What? Why you heathen, you!
  • I dunno about all this I think there's a double standard that gets reinforced by both sexes. Women are just less obvious with their oggling and leeriness...usually. What double standard are we talking about? I thought the topic was Amanda Beard in Playboy. I wouldn't want my son to learn that his idol posed nude in Playgirl magazine either, particularly. And I'm not wild about him growing up to pose nude either, particularly. Both men and women look. I think the only relevant thing here is why it was deemed to be SWIMMING NEWS.
  • Personally, the decision to "accidentally" flash your crotch while getting out of a limo versus posing in playboy is really no different. You are pretty much letting everyone know that you don't have much to offer other than your naked body. I can't imagine that money is a big need for Amanda. Even if it is, it's too bad she thinks so little of herself that her only option to earn money is to strip. Maybe she finds it empowering or something, who knows. On the other hand, she is now part of an elite crowd, she joins the ranks of Anna Nicole Smith.

After wading through many pages...I for one, am reeling with relief to learn that George had not posed nude (especially not with the 'come hither' look). Peter you missed it, I did put a picture of my new swim suit in a post but someone deleted my post.
