100 Fly Predictions

I will go out on a limb and say that we will see at least one of the two (Crocker or Phelps) under 50 for the first time. Maybe even both, but I predict Phelps will take it...... Any others?

I think Phelps is on a roll. He has shown repeatedly that he swims very well over multiple days. Ian has raced just about 70 secs in three heats of 50 fly. He should be fresh of course but Phelps is completely warmed up and full of confidence. Phelps showed he has 100 speed - both in his 100 relay leg and his first half speed of his 200s. He was faster than Peter V. at every split of the 200 free. I think Phelps will go out in the 100 fly like it is a 50 and he will finish with his usual strength. Crocker will match Phelps at the 50 (when Crocker normally has a lead) but will not match Phelps' finish. Phelps swims 50.29, Crocker 50.49.

Someone from heat one swam the second fastest time so Ian (1st) and Michael (3rd) will be in the same semi, which should add a little extra excitement!

yeah, it was Cavic, who is legimate, but still quite a drop to 51.70, qualifying 2nd. Crocker looked awfully good.

Does swimming 200 butterfly faster than Spitz swam 200 free aid the case for being the "greater" swimmer? Interesting observation Lindsey. I don't know if that makes Phelps greater...but it sure shows how much has changed in the world of swimming (in terms of times and what not) since the days of Mark Spitz. Newmastersswimmer
  • I think that it will be very close and I think that Phelps is getting tired. His leadoff leg in the relay was 1.5 seconds slower than his individual 200. I pick Crocker by a hair. I also think that Phelps may have some trouble in the 400 IM with Lochte and Mellouli.

I see Subirats cranked it up and followed Crocker to the wall quite closely.

I noticed that as well. Subirats and Cielo made the transition to long course very well. Both are going to be tough to beat in China.
  • I wouldn't call Phelps' first Olympics a poor one. Not only was he only 15, he had just turned 15. He went his lifetime best at Trials prelims, came back in the semis and bettered it, came back in finals to better it again and make the team. I seem to recall he was 5th or 7th at the wall for the final turn before bringing it home to hit 2nd. With the time he had coming into those Trials, he had no chance of making the team. At the Games, you guessed it, more lifetime bests. Pretty impressive, I'd say. Especially when you look at pictures of him and how rail-thin and little-boy looking he was at the time.
  • I'll also admit to being a huge Michael Phelps fan and have been since watching the 2000 Trials! :o
