Whack-a-swimmer?!?

As I dropped off the kids this morning at Grandma's (who took me to meets almost EVERY weekend as a kid) I started ranting about the Worlds. She said, "Could you believe he was hitting her?" To which I replied, "Huh?" I was talking about the world records. She didn't know details, but it made the news that a man was literally hitting a female swimmer, close-fisted. She was trying to defend herself and run away... not too much information, as all she saw was the trailer. What the heck? Can someone fill me in?

All sarcasm intended. This Ukrainian coach makes Skip Kenney look like Ward Cleaver! Seriously, that was on a pool deck, in public, what goes on in private? That poor girl. I vote "whack-a-coach!" Jerk. Having some exposure to it, many Eastern European's have a different outlook on family life and roles, than those of Western Europeans and Americans. What we condemn and find abhorent may not be so unusual to them. It is all I will say about it. No I do not think it makes it okay. A coworker of mine lives in Australia and says this story is really the story of the meet thus far. When it should be what has been going on in the water. Expect that story to feature on the news tonight with barely a minute of swim action...

A very sad situation. The fact that she takes the blame for his outrageous behavior just says it all.... www.news.com.au/.../0,21985,21465828-661,00.html

Can we say co-dependent? (not in the nice way) Perhaps she is at fault too, however, he is the parent and should be able to have a little more restraint. If the argument was that heated he should have been able to step away before it went that far... just my .02 (not hundredths, swimmers!) Swimming doesn't need this kind of publicity. Perhaps the Ukraine is the Dallas Cowboys of swimming! :argue: I agree. That evidence is flimsy. A family matter...she is still his daughter and was giving as good as she got. Should he be stopped from coaching maybe so...but remember nobody will work you up like your own family. I didn't see "punches" flying there like I expected.

What an idiot, he should have done it somewhere where he wouldn't get caught. AJ Ukrainian swim coach could face life ban The Ukrainian swim coach captured on camera in an ugly scuffle with his daughter during the world championships in Melbourne faces a possible life ban from FINA events. Mykhaylo Zubkov, 38, was filmed pushing and shoving his daughter Kateryna Zubkova during an altercation in a marshalling area at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night. FINA immediately revoked Zubkov's accreditation and on Wednesday convened a Disciplinary Panel to decide his fate. Police are also investigating whether criminal charges can be laid. The incident has stunned the world's elite sports community. Former swim star Kieren Perkins said "ugly parent syndrome" was not rare in sport, but it was career destroying. "As a father (I was) shocked, just unbelievable," Perkins, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

Based upon that video I would say that this is not the first time it has happened and I don't think the girl was particularly scared, she could have fled with ease.

You don't hit women. Period. -LBJ Who says? In this case you are clearly correct. However, if I am getting flogged by a woman I am sure as hell going to defend myself. I am all about respect for women but I am more about respect for myself. Sorry.

I should add that an employee of mine has an abusive ex wife. I have seen him come in many times with bruises and cuts on his face. Restraining orders have been issued and she has been to jail a time or two but what it boils down to is that the police really tend to believe her more than him. In their eyes, these wounds are from his friends who "play rough". Were I in his shoes, she would have a fight on her hands after the first time or two.

I, being a woman, thoroughly depend on my husband's sense of chivalry, etc. that he won't hit me back. When he teases me I give him a good whack. Of course that's all in fun- I agree, men don't hit women, women can hit women though! A good cat fight is always entertaining! :woot: Indeed. The hits you describe are lacking malice. My wife subjects me to those now and again.
