As I dropped off the kids this morning at Grandma's (who took me to meets almost EVERY weekend as a kid) I started ranting about the Worlds. She said, "Could you believe he was hitting her?" To which I replied, "Huh?" I was talking about the world records.
She didn't know details, but it made the news that a man was literally hitting a female swimmer, close-fisted. She was trying to defend herself and run away... not too much information, as all she saw was the trailer.
What the heck? Can someone fill me in?

All sarcasm intended. This Ukrainian coach makes Skip Kenney look like Ward Cleaver!
Seriously, that was on a pool deck, in public, what goes on in private? That poor girl.
I vote "whack-a-coach!" Jerk.
Having some exposure to it, many Eastern European's have a different outlook on family life and roles, than those of Western Europeans and Americans. What we condemn and find abhorent may not be so unusual to them. It is all I will say about it.
No I do not think it makes it okay.
A coworker of mine lives in Australia and says this story is really the story of the meet thus far.
When it should be what has been going on in the water. Expect that story to feature on the news tonight with barely a minute of swim action...
