As I dropped off the kids this morning at Grandma's (who took me to meets almost EVERY weekend as a kid) I started ranting about the Worlds. She said, "Could you believe he was hitting her?" To which I replied, "Huh?" I was talking about the world records.
She didn't know details, but it made the news that a man was literally hitting a female swimmer, close-fisted. She was trying to defend herself and run away... not too much information, as all she saw was the trailer.
What the heck? Can someone fill me in?
Ukrainian swim coach could face life ban
The Ukrainian swim coach captured on camera in an ugly scuffle with his daughter during the world championships in Melbourne faces a possible life ban from FINA events.
Mykhaylo Zubkov, 38, was filmed pushing and shoving his daughter Kateryna Zubkova during an altercation in a marshalling area at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night.
FINA immediately revoked Zubkov's accreditation and on Wednesday convened a Disciplinary Panel to decide his fate.
Police are also investigating whether criminal charges can be laid.
The incident has stunned the world's elite sports community. Former swim star Kieren Perkins said "ugly parent syndrome" was not rare in sport, but it was career destroying. "As a father (I was) shocked, just unbelievable," Perkins, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, told Southern Cross Broadcasting.
All sarcasm intended. This Ukrainian coach makes Skip Kenney look like Ward Cleaver!
Seriously, that was on a pool deck, in public, what goes on in private? That poor girl.
I vote "whack-a-coach!" Jerk.
Can we say co-dependent? (not in the nice way)
Perhaps she is at fault too, however, he is the parent and should be able to have a little more restraint. If the argument was that heated he should have been able to step away before it went that far... just my .02 (not hundredths, swimmers!)
Swimming doesn't need this kind of publicity. Perhaps the Ukraine is the Dallas Cowboys of swimming! :argue:
I, being a woman, thoroughly depend on my husband's sense of chivalry, etc. that he won't hit me back. When he teases me I give him a good whack. Of course that's all in fun- I agree, men don't hit women, women can hit women though!
A good cat fight is always entertaining! :woot:
Karen,
In this case, I don't see it as whack-a-coach. It should be whack-a-dad. I think the dad part is being played out here more than the coach portion.
Hi Jim,
You're right. Whack-a-dad.
I still haven't seen the video of it. I was at work and the filter wouldn't let me on YouTube. I'm home now for 5 min. Brenna (4) is off to Irish dancing, and hopefully, after that I'll be off to swimming :)...
When I get home tonight I'll take a look.
Great swimming at SCAM :applaud:
I don't know how true it is but CNN is reporting that the altercation was over her dating someone her dad didn't like. And she had just gotten out of the pool and had won (her heat I'm assuming).

Video of the incident is on youtube, you can watch and judge for yourself. I didn't see any close-fisted hitting myself but I guess the police are taking it very seriously so I could be viewing it wrong.
