Swimming doesn't suffer from Tribal mentality like other sports do. The only time it comes close is at the Olympics. I doubt the average person ouside of swimming knows that the worlds are going on anyway.
Very cool article! Thanks for posting!
I don't know about this statement from the article, though:
Phelps now seems virtually assured of winning at least seven gold medals in Melbourne, which would set him up for another shot at Mark Spitz's Holy Grail of Olympic records, those seven gold medals in 1972 at Munich.
There's still a long time until the Olympics and you never know who is going to improve and by how much until then. That said, I think we will have some fantastic races to watch in Beijing!
I watched the race a few times on Fox. (Hubby had DVR'd it.) Amazingly fast, especially that third turn. Phelps destroyed VDH with his SDKs off the wall. He had a distinct lope in his stroke that I don't remember being as pronounced the last time I saw his swims televised. In our paper this am, Bowman and Phelps credit his speed and explosiveness to a "newfound dedication to weightlifting." Interesting. I also found it funny how he celebrated: "I took two ambien and passed out."

Fort....good "eye" by you!
Phelps did not "outswim" Hoogie....his (approximate) 7 SDK's off his start/turns made a major difference....
His stroke has also clearly changed.....higher elbows, more angled entry, more lope....
The "boy" has out on some muscle no doubt about that.....I think s(he) should be impressed!
Is the gallop because of their breathing pattern? It seems to me that these swimmers are breathing to one side only during their races and this seems to accentuate the galloping motion.

Whew, then I must be destined to greatness as I do this also even at the chagrin of hundreds of people.

Its not really hijacking if you are asking a reasonable question to clarify another posters comments....Look it up FlyQueenie o.k. Its clearly stated in the official book of posting etiquette (Section 41 D subsection 25 XZ) o.k.
Never heard of the guy BTW
On Topic: Phelps is going to win at least 7 gold in Beijing. Anybody know the record tally of total Olympic gold medals ever won by a swimmer of an entore career? Was it Jenny Thompson with 10?? (Where's the human swimming encyclopedia Skip Thompson when you need him anyway? LOL!)...Anyway, It wouldn't suprise me if Phelps eclipses that record two after just two Olympic appearances!

Thompson ended up with 13 I believe ..
