I agree. He seems like an ego maniac to me. Very selfish....not a good characterisitic for a coach. :shakeshead:
A yet there are so many out there just like this. Not just in swimming but scattered through all sports. It's worse when a person like this is coaching kid's sports.
I swim with a guy who swam for Stanford and Kinney in the early '90's. Can't wait to get his take on it...But I actually think that he had a good relationship with Kinney and still keeps in touch with him. There also is a Nashville swimmer who is currently a senior there and he has improved tremendously while at Stanford. He should be a finalist next week in the 200, 500 and 1650...Not that I'm defending Kinney's actions-I think that it's awful but obviously his methods work for some...As far as recruiting goes, well Stanford is Stanford and the name as well as the opportunity to go to one of the best if not the best school in the nation will speak for itself...
Shaun Phillips. The longer the race, the better this guy gets too.

Go Shaun! I knew his Dad relatively well and saw Shaun swim a bunch when he was in high school. He's amazing!

I agree Beth and I know the man, as well as many others who start out coaching for all the right reasons and after getting to the top and staying there more than not, the God Complex comes through. And what many forget is it is not necessarily the Coach who makes these swimmers great, it is their natural abilities, drive, dedication, sacrifice, and hard work. Making a swimmer great takes both people and not just one should get all the adoration.
I hope the Stanford swimmers KNOW how good they and will perform to the best of their abilities and training, with or without Skip. See? No one stays on a pedestal for long.

Somewhere along the line some coaches lose touch with the fact that it is about the kids, not them.
Chas Morton? One of the greatest age group swimmers ever.
If not the greatest...20+ years later some of his records still stand. I know at one point in time he had all of the 10 and under records and several of the 11-12 records. He graduated from Stanford and went to Vandy Law school so he's really bright as well. This is why I wanted to hear his take on the Kenney thing...Unfortunately there's no way we can convince him to compete in Masters meets...Believe me, though, if he trained he'd be pretty incredible because the technique is still there...
Chas Morten still has 3 National Records in the 10 & Under age group in the 100 Yard Free (:54.74), 50 Fly (:27.07) and the 200 IM (2:12.29) from 1982 so from this, Yes, I would say he is one of the greatest with a 25 year time period for National Records. I have been waiting to see if some of the famous Stanford swimmers from the past will say anything in a press release about the Kenney situation. People like Pablo Morales, Jeff Rouse, Tom Wilkens, Sabir Mohammed, and maybe an active swimmer who graduated recently like Markus Rogan. I have not seen or heard anything from this alumni community. What I did find was an interesting link of stories of past swimmers and people close to this situation. Some interesting points are made about the timing of the story with NCAA's approaching, other swimmers views of this situation and others like it in the past, and should Kenney be dismissed for these actions.

Thanks for the link Skip. I saw that Chas and J.J. (he also swam with us,another Stanford swimmer of the early '90's) had posts there basically supporting Kenney. It will be interesting to see how Stanford does at the NCAA's and if they win the championship, will the University fire Kenney??? Unfortunately I'm sure that at least part of it depends on how much money (I think that it's the McLean's) we're talking about here...Wouldn't want to be that athletic director...
The other side of the story...one of my teammates swam at Stanford in the 90's and still maintains contact with Kenney...He says that those swimmers were essentially "trouble" all year long...He agrees that Kenney did not follow the appropriate course of action and should have actually dismissed them from the team last year...
