I thought I'd try an experiment here. I propose that anyone of any swimming level can use this thread (or not) when, whether in a small way or earthshaking manner you've done something in the pool that you're proud and/or pleased by. Anyone is welcome to add encouraging comments (or not) or ask for more info., but please no grandstanding or feuding. Okay- I'll go first (and I'm just as hesitant as anyone else). Context: last few months hellish: collapse of my dream business, death in family, huge money troubles etc. result months out of water & exercise & 30lb gain. Further, I just went back over the last 10 yrs, averaged 1 meet a year, no more than 4 months training in any one year. So- been back in water 4 weeks, 2-3 times a week and mostly feeling like chopped liver. Monday night coach say we're going to do dive 25's (meters) from blocks, starter's instructions. Now I haven't done this in years 'cause I have a very bad neck- but I've been frustrated so...did all 3 breastroke 16.3, 15.5, 16.2 which tells me I've still got prospects to go fast again! I am pleased.

I know you guys are right, but still....I hate to lose! Don't you? You didn't lose. You didn't come in 2nd. You're 50, she's 19. Each of you was in a different race (that happened to take place in the same pool, or body of water, at the same time). I know the feeling though. At my one meet per year, this past February: The first result for my age group's 50m Free that was posted (on a wall), showed me coming in 2nd of two participants in the 60-64. I consoled myself with the excuse that I had been suffering from rotator cuff injury since last July and was only slowly coming back to swimming. However, a few days later, re-checking those results on the meet organizer's website, I saw that I had placed 1st (of six or seven) in that group.

  • nowhere near as impressive as all your posts, but..... today i swam my mile (non-stop as always), but today for the first time, i used flip turns all the way!!!!! somebody was kind enough to teach me the flip turn at the pool last night.... he left before i could get his name. thanks to the mystery teacher. be, jim Way to go! You are a fast learner!

  • Jim, Some people are natural breaststrokers and some of us have to REALLY work at it. My daughters are in the first category. I, on the other hand, have had to work at it! You might surprise yourself!

thank you, everybody... the credit for the flip turns goes to a very young but patient teacher. not all of them were pretty... but all of them were flip turns... with time they will get better. for me, this is a HUGE accomplishment. soon i will be ready to take on the BR..... that just looks like it requires sooooo much coordination.... do people drown learning the BR?:shakeshead: thanks again.... be, jim

In my book that's just as impressive, if not more so. Learning a flip turn is hard, especially for an adult because we tend to lack some of the flexability the kids use to make it look so easy. It's also easy to revert to old habits when we get tired, so using your new skill for the whole swim is quite an accomplishment! Thanks to everyone for the pat on the back. I can totally relate to the Phelps story, Peter. My kids swim coach is Marie Labosky (who is still a Trials qualifer in the 4-IM), and since I work out with the kids and occasionally swim meets with them, one of the moms says, "I think it would be great if the three of you (Marie, myself, & one of the other coaches) raced each other at the end of practice." I looked at her like she was nuts and said, "I just swam a 5000 yd practice, and even if I wasn't dead tired, it wouldn't be much of a race. Marie is 10 years younger and an elite swimmer. I swim for Dolphins. It would be like me racing an 8 & under." Mom says, "Oh. I thought it would give the kids something to talk about if you beat her." Sure would, but the only way I'm even close in that race is if she's wearing a drag suit & a tether!

Sure would, but the only way I'm even close in that race is if she's wearing a drag suit & a tether! This has happened to me too Dana! People are insane. Except I see you need an "attagirl" cuz you're doing some major engine building swimming with the kiddies and doing 5000+ yards. Keep up the good work! Jim: You too, Jim, with those flip turns. Major accomplishment!! Yes, people feel like they are drowning learning breaststroke. Do you really need to learn that one?! I guess there are IMs in your future? I need an attagirl because I just got 30 injections to the shoulder from my prolo guy and it hurts a bit. But he still said I could swim tomorrow!! So I'll be off to the pool with my big fin. Good thing I got in a good workout yesterday. Only bad news is that I have to cut back the competitions a bit and cut back the # events. But that's OK. I can live with it, as long as I can still hit the pool!
  • Ouch Fort that sounds painful! Attagirl for being so tough.....but what can you expect from a F.A.F. Sista Fiestress like you...LOL! Did your doctor say how long it would be before your shoulder was back to normal again?.....Or when it would be relatively back to normal again? Hang in there fort b/c I'm sure if you do all the things you are suppose to do, that your shoulder will improve....so hopefully this cutting back on your competitions and events at competitions and such will only be a temporary situation? ... (just cut out the 200 fly and you'll be fine...LOL!!) Newmastersswimmer I can still swim with it, Jim! I've apparently been swimming with an abnormal worn out labrum for 20 months now, as it is a relic from youthful engine building/trauma, which really should have been detected earlier when my shoulder/trap/neck started hurting. That's why I'm worried about my twin with the same symptoms. :( I can still keep swimming "at my current level." (Just did 4000 yesterday.) I just can't ramp it up or engage in major engine building. Have to be a bit cautious, use fins a lot and rein in my natural tendency to overdo. The doc doesn't mind too much if I compete even, so I'll still go to my meet on March 25 and to Zones in April. I'll just swim fewer events and skip nationals this year. I don't get to all that many meets anyway because of the kidlets. (Maybe only one, two if I'm lucky, this summer.) If all goes well, I should be much better and maybe pain free by mid-fall after everything gets a chance to regrow and get stronger. Prolo has a pretty high success rate for shoulders. Fingers crossed. I've even heard of people becoming "prolo addicts" and using it to fix everything, knees, ankles, etc. LOL. NOT that I'm ever planning to do a 200 fly like you -- even with a hopefully "new" shoulder. (Don't have to "cut it out" -- I've never swum it as a master, slacker that I am.) So when you get in and do that first 200 fly, you will be deserving of dozens of attaboys!!
