Attaboy or attagirl: SR NH everyone welcome

I thought I'd try an experiment here. I propose that anyone of any swimming level can use this thread (or not) when, whether in a small way or earthshaking manner you've done something in the pool that you're proud and/or pleased by. Anyone is welcome to add encouraging comments (or not) or ask for more info., but please no grandstanding or feuding. Okay- I'll go first (and I'm just as hesitant as anyone else). Context: last few months hellish: collapse of my dream business, death in family, huge money troubles etc. result months out of water & exercise & 30lb gain. Further, I just went back over the last 10 yrs, averaged 1 meet a year, no more than 4 months training in any one year. So- been back in water 4 weeks, 2-3 times a week and mostly feeling like chopped liver. Monday night coach say we're going to do dive 25's (meters) from blocks, starter's instructions. Now I haven't done this in years 'cause I have a very bad neck- but I've been frustrated so...did all 3 breastroke 16.3, 15.5, 16.2 which tells me I've still got prospects to go fast again! I am pleased.
  • I can still swim with it, Jim! I've apparently been swimming with an abnormal worn out labrum for 20 months now, as it is a relic from youthful engine building/trauma, which really should have been detected earlier when my shoulder/trap/neck started hurting. That's why I'm worried about my twin with the same symptoms. :( I can still keep swimming "at my current level." (Just did 4000 yesterday.) I just can't ramp it up or engage in major engine building. Have to be a bit cautious, use fins a lot and rein in my natural tendency to overdo. The doc doesn't mind if I compete even, so I'll still go to my meet on March 25 and to Zones in April. I'll just swim fewer events and skip nationals this year. I don't get to all that many meets anyway because of the kidlets. (Maybe only one, two if I'm lucky, this summer.) If all goes well, I should be much better and maybe pain free by mid-fall after everything gets a chance to regrow and get stronger. Prolo has a pretty high success rate for shoulders. Fingers crossed. I've even heard of people becoming "prolo addicts" and using it to fix everything, knees, ankles, etc. LOL. NOT that I'm ever planning to do a 200 fly like you -- even with a hopefully "new" shoulder. (Don't have to "cut it out" -- I've never swum it as a master, slacker that I am.) So when you get in and do that first 200 fly, you will be deserving of dozens of attaboys!! I'm so sorry you are having to go through all this! THIRTY injections? OUCH!:shakeshead: This reminds me of the moive "Major Payne". He said, "I know how to take yo mind off that pain!" hee hee. (If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about) Have the injections helped yet? I hope so. I'm just glad you are able to keep swimming. Way to go for toughing it out and doing 4000 yards! Hang in there and keep us posted. I swam today and felt pretty good. I actually did fly today!:woot: (I was afraid I would forget how to do it since it had been sooo long!!) My cranky shoulder did fine! I'm SO GLAD! I've been doing an easy, long warm up lately before I do anything hard and it really helps! It takes away from the amount of yardage and engine building I get done but, it beats hurting myself and being out for 2 months! I have a meet this weekend and I'm so excited! I'm trying not to be nervous and worry about my times. I'm just going to go and do my best and look at this as my starting point to improve from! I can't wait to swim a relay with my 18 year old daughter! This will be her first Masters Meet!! I'm soooo excited!:woot:

This has happened to me too Dana! People are insane. Except I see you need an "attagirl" cuz you're doing some major engine building swimming with the kiddies and doing 5000+ yards. Keep up the good work! Jim: You too, Jim, with those flip turns. Major accomplishment!! Yes, people feel like they are drowning learning breaststroke. Do you really need to learn that one?! I guess there are IMs in your future? I need an attagirl because I just got 30 injections to the shoulder from my prolo guy and it hurts a bit. But he still said I could swim tomorrow!! So I'll be off to the pool with my big fin. Good thing I got in a good workout yesterday. Only bad news is that I have to cut back the competitions a bit and cut back the # events. But that's OK. I can live with it, as long as I can still hit the pool! Ouch Fort that sounds painful! Attagirl for being so tough.....but what can you expect from a F.A.F. Sista Fiestress like you...LOL! Did your doctor say how long it would be before your shoulder was back to normal again?.....Or when it would be relatively back to normal again? Hang in there fort b/c I'm sure if you do all the things you are suppose to do, that your shoulder will improve....so hopefully this cutting back on your competitions and events at competitions and such will only be a temporary situation? ... (just cut out the 200 fly and you'll be fine...LOL!!) Newmastersswimmer

Sounds pretty exciting with your daughter being on your relay and all! I'm also glad to hear that you've been able to work out fairly consistently as of late.....Are you racing against your daughter in any of your events by chance?....Let us know how it all turns out. Have fun!! Newmastersswimmer
  • Beth, you'll be fine, just concentrate on the experience and the joy of it. By the way, we expect some photos. Excellent idea! Beth, post some photos of you and your daughter. That would be fun! You're not swimming the 100 *** though are you? Just the relay together? I'm so glad you can do fly!! :groovy: The best stroke ever -- also the most shoulder wrecking stroke (well for my particular ailment anyway). ;) Are you swimming your fav event, the 100 free? Report back so we can give you some more attagirls. I think we all enjoy doing that. :) Peter: There will be no photos. :shakeshead: They weren't all "injections." Some just pin pricks, slapped some biofreeze on it. No more NSAIDs. We'll see over time whether the prolo helps. I am apparently the first prolo guinea pig on these boards even though it seems to be increasing in popularity. Me and those baseball pitchers ... If my shoulder is substantially better in 6 months and I can still swim and and fly and compete along the way, I'm changing my name to ProloQueen. I'm sure FlyQueen won't mind. Especially since she appears to be morphing into a freestyler. She may have to get a new secret nemesis. ;) Just don't give me up the 50 fly, FlyQueen, even if you love that 100 free! At least no one can say I'm conventional in my choice of therapy. ;)

Beth, you'll be fine, just concentrate on the experience and the joy of it. By the way, we expect some photos. Leslie the Living Pincushion! Taking Tough Bugger designation to new heights. No wonder some people can't understand our sport. When you're 'not overdoing it', try to think of the rest of us as some ominous Greek chorus harping at you from the deck 'Slow d-o-o-w-w-n!' 'Doom lies with shortened stroke' "Butterfly sucks' (whoops, had to work that one in)...anyway, we all hope to hear that you've been good. No photos, please.
  • FrankenFort? :thhbbb:  Did you miss the NH designation? :thhbbb: Thanks guys. I swam the 4000 BEFORE I got the 30 prolo jabs. I'm still kinda sore today. Might not swim until tomorrow... Shouldn't be surgical. No big ole SLAP tear. Just all worn out; surgery not indicted for that problem. That's why there is no real handicap for age groupers, as Muppet was saying in Dave's previous handicap thread. Any muscle memory advantage is wiped out by the wear and tear you put yourself through doing mega-yardage when young. I'm optimistic. I just don't want to be only a breaststroker the rest of my life.:thhbbb: I'm leaving that for mini-Fort. One breaststroker in the family is enough! I hope to meet you at Zones, Dana. I'll sing up for some wee sprints and the 1-IM. Sounds like you may be kicking my butt in those events though. Biofreeze is divine. Medic Ice is good too. Not as cold. I don't think I'll do an appletini. The doc did say glass of wine was a good muscle relaxer in the evening. I like breaststokers with pinot grigio. ;) :thhbbb:

Congrats to both Swim Stud and Fortress; Swim Stud for finally finding two abs that can be seen without binoculars (I don't have any), and for Fortress for becoming a science experiment. Look forward to updates. donna

. :shakeshead: They weren't all "injections." Some just pin pricks, slapped some biofreeze on it. Either way, OUCH Fort! I can't believe you still swim 4000 after all that. I would be swimming in a big green appletini!:notworthy: Isn't Biofreeze the best!!! A trainer put me onto it a few years back & it is now a swim bag staple. I wish I could say that I do 5000 with the kiddies all the time. Alas, it's usually only once a week. It takes me that long to recover afterward. My engine is not quite vintage, but it ain't a brand new hemi either. Dana
