Butterflyers

Is it just me or does it seem like everybody and their brother in usms is a buterflyer. lot of butterflers out there.
  • There are a lot of butterfliers on our age group team, so maybe they just all grow up and butterfly. For me butterfly was easier for me to learn than backstroke, so it may be a bodytype thing. Of course, it does not mean I am fast at either one.
  • Fly done well is cool. Fly not done well.......is painful.

It's all relative. I consider myself a flyer. BUT, I can only swim about two laps pretty well. I die on the 100, and the 200 is not even worth discussing. And when it comes to doing fly sets in practice, I do lots of fly drill and free/ fly and never any long yardage in it. (I never did 10x200 fly in any practice - as a kid or otherwise). So, in reality, that's not really a butterflyer, but I count myself as one. . . maybel b/c I was pretty good in it as a kid. Depends on your definition of a "butterflyer." Perhaps some of us are just trying to be positive! Talk is cheap.

I think everyone and their mother is a distance freestyler. And that's just the way it should be. But I'm told by my family members that fly is cool. So I will have to put up with them being insufferable about fly, fly, fly.

Gee Warren, you're looking pretty buff and excited there in your new avatar. ;) I guess you must be a sprint freestyler like your hero. I love fly. I am just too old to do more than a 100, and a 100 is an effort extraordinaire. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I'll ever do it again unless I actually hit the water more. I think many of us were just past age group flyers and we get very sentimental about our beloved stroke. (Hence, the ragging on butterstruggle that is sometimes seen.) I'm supposed to be a backstroker now anyway. At least I can make a 100 of that without becoming paralyzed. Really, I think most USMS swimmers are freestylers. My coach always complains when she gets meet entries that everyone enters the "freeststyle five pack." Even though Terry disagrees, I think fly is hard on shoulders and *** is hard on knees. So you're left with free, free, free. I wanna be free of free.

So you're left with free, free, free. I wanna be free of free. In theory fly shouldn't be much harder on the shoulder because the pull is the same as free, just the recovery is somewhat different ... again in theory ... So tonight we did a fantastic set ... 200 free, 4 x 50 fly on 1:00, 200 free, 4 x 50 back 1:00, 200 free, 4 x 50 *** on 1:05 ... being the sprinter I am I took the first 50 fly out way to hard, the last one was far slower and the 200 after it wasn't pretty ...then we did a set of 6 x 50 on 2:30 we had our choice between 50s, 100s, or 150s ... I did 50s. I wanted to do some fly and decided on the last one to go for it ... halfway back I absolutely died ... the arms were not moving forward ... it was ugly and painful... but that brings me to my question ... after the 4 x50 fly it was my legs that were really hurtin' ... does this mean I'm not using my arms enough? I can't think that it's that I'm overusing the kick ... I get a LOT of my power from my hips and legs, but I have really strong "flyer" shoulders ... thoughts, anyone?

I have always been a flyer and love it. I remember pissing my coach off in high school and he made me do a timed 400 FLY right after a long hard practice. Needless to say I kept my mouth shut after that!!!!

Butterfly is a cruel deception foisted on the swimming community to corrupt their well-known family values. As the seminal movie 'Dr.Strangelove' noted, this stroke was invented to 'sap our precious bodily juices'.
  • this stroke was invented to 'sap our precious bodily juices'. Bodily fluids, Peter, bodily fluids. Get it right! :joker:
  • Is it just me or does it seem like everybody and their brother in usms is a buterflyer. lot of butterflers out there. I have formulated two theories on this ... ONE - with age comes wisdom and with wisdom comes the realization that fly is the most superior stroke so we decide to master it ... OR TWO - flyers are the loudest and always have to have their voices heard ...
