  • Gee Warren, you're looking pretty buff and excited there in your new avatar. ;) I guess you must be a sprint freestyler like your hero. I love fly. I am just too old to do more than a 100, and a 100 is an effort extraordinaire. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I'll ever do it again unless I actually hit the water more. I think many of us were just past age group flyers and we get very sentimental about our beloved stroke. (Hence, the ragging on butterstruggle that is sometimes seen.) I'm supposed to be a backstroker now anyway. At least I can make a 100 of that without becoming paralyzed. Really, I think most USMS swimmers are freestylers. My coach always complains when she gets meet entries that everyone enters the "freeststyle five pack." Even though Terry disagrees, I think fly is hard on shoulders and *** is hard on knees. So you're left with free, free, free. I wanna be free of free. In theory fly shouldn't be much harder on the shoulder because the pull is the same as free, just the recovery is somewhat different ... again in theory ... So tonight we did a fantastic set ... 200 free, 4 x 50 fly on 1:00, 200 free, 4 x 50 back 1:00, 200 free, 4 x 50 *** on 1:05 ... being the sprinter I am I took the first 50 fly out way to hard, the last one was far slower and the 200 after it wasn't pretty ...then we did a set of 6 x 50 on 2:30 we had our choice between 50s, 100s, or 150s ... I did 50s. I wanted to do some fly and decided on the last one to go for it ... halfway back I absolutely died ... the arms were not moving forward ... it was ugly and painful... but that brings me to my question ... after the 4 x50 fly it was my legs that were really hurtin' ... does this mean I'm not using my arms enough? I can't think that it's that I'm overusing the kick ... I get a LOT of my power from my hips and legs, but I have really strong "flyer" shoulders ... thoughts, anyone?
