Swimmers get no respect

As I was browsing around for articles on tonights Bengals/Ravens game I ran across this article and this quote. www.msnbc.msn.com/.../ "I mean, this isn't a soft sport. We don't play chess. This isn't swimming. This isn't one of those kind of sports. It's football. It takes a man to play this game, and to play this game you have to have passion.'' I had to laugh.
  • Well, in all honesty, there is a reason I chose swimming over football. Getting pummelled day in and day out had no appeal to me. I vacationed with an NFL player this past summer and he was huge, fast and in incredible shape. Quite a physical specimen. I challenged him to a swimming race and he challenged me to a tackling contest. I decided to call it even before the feats of strength.
  • Nice story Lewis! Are we really going to call Geek "Lewis" now? I think he just put his name on there because Gull took his off after that "cautionary tail" thread. I can't spend that much time watching football anymore. I hate boxing! I don't think golf is a real sport either. There is no physical exercise or endurance involved. Now, Tiger Woods may be a real athlete, but he's not in a real sport. The only sport that should take 4 hours is marathon swimming or a real marathon.

We get no respect. No respect i tell ya. Yeah but Swimmers don't get a 40sec break between each play. Let's snap that to 20 secs then we'll see how those big lumps do...:p

Oh gawd...passion? Top swimmers lack passion compared to football players? How about we lack great rolling guts of fat instead?

Nice story Lewis! Having never been a football fan I don't have much love for the sport but I do respect the athletes for what they endure during practice and during games. I think they lack sufficient respect for their own bodies, but I still respect their efforts. Now, boxing! That is a sport that I have no respect for, whatsoever, at all. I despise the sport and think the athletes are borderline brain dead before their first match.

Now, boxing! That is a sport that I have no respect for, whatsoever, at all. I despise the sport and think the athletes are borderline brain dead before their first match. I had the pleasure of meeting the late Floyd Patterson;a true sportsman in every sense of the word and a well respected citizen who used every bit of his celebrity for the benefit of others. Not all boxers are ear biting rapists!
  • Why don't you go to a football practice one day and see how it feels to get hit for a few hours on end. Then, the next day, put on 10-15 pounds of plastic under long pants and a polyester shirt, a plastic non-breathable helmet and do it in 95 degree weather. Football, like swimming, has different positions (or events in our case). Certain positions are built for endurance, others for speed. You want to tell me a free safety or DB doesn't have endurance or an o-lineman. You don't think trying to wrestle another 350 pound man (or two) to the ground 40 plays a game requires serious endurance? When was the last time you practiced 4 days a week and then did a meet for 16/18 straight weekends? Oh, and if you did those good, you get to do another 1-4 more meets. I love swimming but I'm not about to mock another hard sport, that's silly. You are entitled to your opinion. I did not "mock" football. My point is that I'm sick of the macho types bashing swimming. It's fun to see them try our sport and gain a new respect for it. I personally have no desire to be squashed and hit, wear pads and put my body through all the threat of injuries that football players do. I also don't get paid to do that like they do.
  • In all my years of swimming I have never been mocked as being unmacho nor have I ever seen it. I don't know where that happens but it sure isn't around here. Most people will generally respect an athete, regardless of sport, except soccer of course.
