Swimmers get no respect

As I was browsing around for articles on tonights Bengals/Ravens game I ran across this article and this quote. www.msnbc.msn.com/.../ "I mean, this isn't a soft sport. We don't play chess. This isn't swimming. This isn't one of those kind of sports. It's football. It takes a man to play this game, and to play this game you have to have passion.'' I had to laugh.
  • Every sport has it's strengths and weaknesses. I respect most athletes for the dedication and training they go through. I guess I just have a chip on my shoulder from years of seeing swimming placed on the back page of the sports section and never mentioned on the news. In the Atlanta area, they cover football and baseball only and I'm so tired of it. For example: 1)When UGA women won the NCAA's in Athens, it wasn't even covered. 2) When Amanda Weir (from Ga.) won Nationals they didn't report it. 3)When Amanda was on a relay that set an American record it was barely mentioned on the back of the sports section. They were too busy reporting about the Falcons and the Braves. Does that explain my rage toward football? :frustrated:
  • Not to mention an insult to my beloved Tar Heels, whose women's soccer team is one of the greatest sports dynasties of all time. But, I did succeed in getting a rise out of you.
  • Maybe I need to join "Football players are people too" support group. Aquageek can join the "Soccer players are too athletes!" group. All will be at peace then.
  • bowling could be considered a sport My drinking team has a bowling problem. Of course bowling is a sport.
  • I could be wrong, but Im thinking swimmers train harder and longer than the "ballplayer" sports. Yes, you are correct, you are indeed wrong. At the NCAA level, all sports are limited as to practice time. Have you ever actually participated in a basketball or football or wrestling practice, or lacrosse or soccer? They are all grueling and you don't leave them dry. Have you ever actually played a full game of real football, not flag football or powder puff football? A very close friend is a D1 basketball coach and while the swim team is humping it in the pool, those guys are working just as hard in the gym. You ever seen an NFL running back up close. Go tell Tiki he's not in prime condition. How many swimmers can run a sub 5 second 40? But, a huge percentage of footballers can and those guys are enormous. No, they aren't in shape. And, many drive sweet pimped out SUVs. It's ludicrous to say swimming is harder or easier than any other sport, except bowling, the mother of all contact sports - hand contacts beer, beer contacts belly.
  • As for the ball players sweet pimped out SUV, who cares. I chose to get my rewards in life in other ways, not by what kind of car I drive. Ooh, you should check out Phelps' SUV, nice indeed.
  • Warren, under your definition of sport you are saying track and field, gymnastics and diving are not sports? :dunno:
  • Warren, under your definition of sport you are saying track and field, gymnastics and diving are not sports? :dunno: No serious discussion of what constitutes sport versus non sport can exclude NASCAR.
  • Yes, that is why we call the former set "team sports." See how you use the adjective thing to differentiate? Here try this out: acoustic guitar : electric guitar :: team sport : _________
  • No serious discussion of what constitutes sport versus non sport can exclude NASCAR. Dear Lewis: I know you love NASCAR, you ole forum baiter. You're probably watching it on that golf cart you're zooming around in practicing that truly impossible "sport" or on that built in TV/DVD player in your SUV. Let's just put NASCAR in the non sport category and proceed to argue about other important sports topics. I'm sure all NASCAR drivers can run sub 5 40s and do sub 4:00 miles. I bet they can even break 50 in the 100 free if pressed. They are truly amazing non athletes. Now, as you know, I do agree with you about soccer, the scourge of youth sports.
