Swimmers get no respect

As I was browsing around for articles on tonights Bengals/Ravens game I ran across this article and this quote. www.msnbc.msn.com/.../ "I mean, this isn't a soft sport. We don't play chess. This isn't swimming. This isn't one of those kind of sports. It's football. It takes a man to play this game, and to play this game you have to have passion.'' I had to laugh.

  • Why don't you go to a football practice one day and see how it feels to get hit for a few hours on end. Then, the next day, put on 10-15 pounds of plastic under long pants and a polyester shirt, a plastic non-breathable helmet and do it in 95 degree weather. Football, like swimming, has different positions (or events in our case). Certain positions are built for endurance, others for speed. You want to tell me a free safety or DB doesn't have endurance or an o-lineman. You don't think trying to wrestle another 350 pound man (or two) to the ground 40 plays a game requires serious endurance? When was the last time you practiced 4 days a week and then did a meet for 16/18 straight weekends? Oh, and if you did those good, you get to do another 1-4 more meets. I love swimming but I'm not about to mock another hard sport, that's silly. You are entitled to your opinion. I did not "mock" football. My point is that I'm sick of the macho types bashing swimming. It's fun to see them try our sport and gain a new respect for it. I personally have no desire to be squashed and hit, wear pads and put my body through all the threat of injuries that football players do. I also don't get paid to do that like they do.
