What do YOU need to do to have a major swimming breakthrough?" I started this thread over in the work outs section which I think doesn't get as much traffic as the general discussion board so here's the link forums.usms.org/showthread.php but my point is, No matter what, the time between right now and your focus meet is going to pass, and the things you do to prepare for your meet is of the UTMOST importance. the choices you make the chances you take swim hard in practice rehearse racing I want to read your story about your breakthrough. Decide it starts today that this season will be your best season EVER What do you need to do to make this true? Ande
  • Does improving my pb by over 1 second in the 50Y fly count as a major breakthrough? My meet yesterday was the final meet of this year and I spent the last 2 weeks working mainly on the fly in hopes of getting a best time. The bulk of my preparation consisted of working on the kicking part of the swim and lots of drills. Also several race pace swims off the blocks where I swam through the turn and 1 stroke past the breakout. I bettered my pb by 1.1 sec. (set1-1/2 years ago) and was 1.4 sec faster than my last meet 2 weeks ago.
  • yes improving your pb in the 50Y fly by over 1 second counts as a major breakthrough congratulations anyone else have something you'd like to share? • Poolraat: One second in a 50 is huge!! Good job!! Ande: I'm sorry your relay team didn't get the record. But it looked like you really swam well in all your events! I hope you got mega kudos for coming back early and putting in the family time. I think I had an unintentional breakthrough swim this weekend. I haven't been training well lately due to an injury, but I went to a swim meet for fun and experience this weekend, swimming very few events. I guess I was sort of "tapered" since my training has been minimized the last month, but I hadn't done enough sprinting, etc. either. Anyway, I swam the 50 fly SCM. Never swam it before. Because my shoulder was cranky, I doubled my underwater SDKs and really focused on cranking my start and turns. I was pleasantly surprised at the results. Thought I would go much slower. I will PM you with the times. But, suffice to say, simply focusing on SDKs made a huge difference! I'm definitely going to do this more in the future.
  • congratulations that's awesome keep working on SDKs, you have up to 15 meters on each length, some swimmers can SDK faster than they can swim fly and or back if you get really great at it you could take 10 - 15 kicks per length ande Poolraat: One second in a 50 is huge!! • Poolraat: One second in a 50 is huge!! Good job!! Thanks Fortress. You had a good swim too. Congrats. How did your shoulder hold up?
  • Coming up on my second full year of training and have just managed to develop the muscles and endurance necessary for my workouts to become more productive. Now I can put in 10,000 yds a week without any more tendonitis in my left shoulder. This is my breakthrough. Lowering my time in the 100 free will be my next priority. If I can get under a minute this winter I will post this as my next breakthrough, but at 42 yrs old I will be far from satisfied with that. My goal is deep into the 50's.

  • anyone have or working on a swimming breakthrough? ande YES!!! My "breakthrough" is to do my physical therapy and get released by my doctor to swim again! I'm doing my exercises and hope to be able to swim pain free very soon. You really don't know how important swimming is to you til you can't do it! :shakeshead:

anyone have or working on a swimming breakthrough? ande Sort of Ande. I'm still training for first meet. I set a goal last night at 7 x 100 on 4:00 BR for part of my set. I in fact managed 9 (ultimate goal is 10 reps) Anyhow I did a 200, then started the reps of 100. First 100 was a good time, then I lost a second or two on the next three reps but held there. Then on the final 4 I improved again by 1 second and held it. On the 9th rep I got a cramp coming off of the final turn, and just coped my way to the end. My breakthrough was really that I hit a point on rep 5 where I felt that it would be really hard to get to 7, but on 6 felt much more comfortable with my swim and felt I could go on and surpass 7 reps which I did. I still felt worked out upon completion of the 100 and gasped a bit but my recovery really started to improve, which let my time improve a tic I guess. I tried my martial arts breathing to gain more control of my body and mind between reps. I would have done 10 but for the cramp. I do not like to push when I cramp--I stopped and hydrated. I then did some 50's, 25's and a 100 cool down. A decent swim. I feel pretty amped about it.
  • with championship meets coming up there's still time for YOU to have YOUR breakthrough this season think about what you need to do to make this happen plus think about what you no longer need to do you can BREAK ON THROUGH ande
