There seems to be as many opinions and misinformation floating around about personal weight that I thought we might share and perhaps open our minds a bit. Here are the questions that I feel will provide useful info:
Age
Sex
Height
Present weight range (many people vary 3-4 lbs over a day)
Ideal weight range for optimum health (your opinion)
Ideal weight range for optimum swimming performance
What steps are you taking, or will you be taking, to lose or
gain the weight difference between present & optimum.
I'll start

188-194 (down from 205ish when I started back swimming 1 1/2 years ago)
185-190 (No evidence for this whatsoever, but I feel pretty good now, so this seems reasonable)
182-186 (No evidence whatsoever. I made this up)
If I cut out beer, I'd drop the pounds, but life without beer isn't worth living, and it hasn't seemed to slow down the Good/Bad/Ugly/Whatever Smith who says that he likes beer. So I'll just keep plugging along after my pool re-opens -- 6 weeks from now. AAAAARRRGGGGHH.

175+/- (health practitioners always want you too light)
185-190
10 pounds (maybe 15) lighter would be a suitable compromise and still maintain buoyancy. Too light (thin) and I have to exert effort just to stay up on top of the water. Need to cut out the ice cream and late night snacks.

NO more Sonic M&M blasts, gain back the pound I just lost because of them. I have been doing -no candy, more water, popcorn once a week, one drink a day, no french fries or fried food. And of course swim more...trying to do swim least 4 times a week with an avg. of 3 miles a week.

I've lost close to 35 lbs over the last 7 years, slowly, building back muscle in the weight room as I lost the weight. I see no evidence in any functions I monitor (blood pressure, resting pulse, endurance, swim speed etc) that the loss of weight has helped. I do know that my cross-country ski racing has greatly suffered because I no longer carry the food stores built in that can sustain long distance racing.
I'm now trying actively to overeat to keep the weight loss under control.
I have been very active for over 50 years and I was a fit fat man...

I thought only people under 6'0" found it necessary to add the fractional inches to their height.
I'm 5' 10 4/7", slightly less than 5' 10 5/8".

OK, forum mounty, here goes.

I have cut out all chips and ice cream lately, although I still eat a bag of flamin' hot Cheetos every week, can't resist those. I have contemplated reducing beer intake but feel that would adversely impact my mental health and all-around well being.
I have lost 6 pounds so far this year by dropping 3 days of swimming a week and added running and 2 conditioning classes (aka - one hour of sheer terror) on those three days.
Of course, with four fantastic college football games on tomorrow (GO DAWGS, Heels, Horns and Nittany Lions)I suspect chips, beer and hot dogs might be my three food groups for the day.

130-135 my opinion
130-145 much beyond 138 and I think it gets puggy.
132 lbs is the goal this season - but with lots of muscle and tone, need to do core work more consistently, more flexibility focus and add more wieght work esp with re to my back. But below 135 lbs and friends and family say I look too gaunt. It is the chocolate that does me in, can easily skip the fatty foods, fries chips etc, the carbos and the alcohol - but I am a dark chocolate addict...need to skip late night snacking.
I have seen many women in my age group heavier than me beat me soundly - so who knows. I feel like swimming esp kick sets, has added an inch to my thighs and butt or maybe it really was that 80% cocoa bar...
This is very interesting.

My goal for 2006 is to get down to 190, starting the year at 205. I'm stalled out at 200, achieved mostly by adding about 1500 extra yards per week.
My plan until the end of the year is to eat only one helping at meals and eliminate snacks between work and dinner (3:30-7 pm).
