  • I agree. This one is much more humorous than infuriating. My observation has been that anyone who could actually beat me wouldn't actually stoop to doing this, thus I pretty much always "win" these "races." The other guy certainly expends a lot more energy, though! My favorite was the time I was 8 months pregnant and swam at this little college pool in the mornings. I'd inevitably be in the middle of a long set when this one older guy would get in the water in the lane next to me and proceed to wait until I got to the wall to "race" me on his first 50. I thought it was a coincidence the first couple of times. After that I would just take pleasure in trying to take nice long strokes and still beat him to the wall as I'd turn and keep swimming. Seriously, was he going to go home and brag to his friends that he beat an 8 months pregnant woman???

why infuriating? it happens to me and i think its funny. usually young guys who are obviously very competitive but yet unwilling to train. the best is when they thrash around and kick up a storm but still don't "win" the "race". another funny one was the time i'm midway through a set of fast 50's on 1:30 and after seeing that i have stopped for 30sec or so, a guy comes over and asks me "if you're not going to swim can i have this lane?" the mentality seems to be that if you don't swim a mile straight then you aren't really working out and should get out of the way of those who do. on the other side though, as a casual gym user i'm sure the serious gym rats get a good laugh out of my pathetic strength training techniques.

My pool is soooo incredibly stuffy that it makes distance swimming feel like you are slowly suffocating. Can't we get a fan or open the door? It is horrible. Upon complaint I am told that it doesn't bother anyone else. Maybe its my problem???

Loosing to someone who is all over the place, eventhough you swam a clean race..... case in point.....my son(16) swam the 100 free this weekend and lost to a kid who has a petty strong and efficient stroke for 20 Y-and then the wall happens and his flip turn makes you wonder if he pops up in another lane, or will come to screeching halt-or both.Bless him,he is transitioning from water polo,so this turning thing is very foreign to him....but still. silver lining-my son now has an incentive to speed up and clean up his stroke
  • Somebody threw my Swimmer magazine in the trash thinking it was junk mail, and I hadn't read it yet. I save all of them. Meet me at Nationals - you can have mine - read it already. :)
