My guess is 6300 total participants.

Kokkole- you didn't say anything wrong & nobody was objecting to your use of english. Brian was having fun in a long-established forum manner, one part Hunter S. Thompson, the other, Charley the Tuna. Besides he is a coach, nuff said.
Dude or Dudette,
No Problem, If you can't get to Worlds there may be several other meets in the States that would be fun.
Here's one......

I'm sorry - I'm trying hard, but I don't understand a lot of what you are writing.
My question is: there are some masters swimmers in my country who would like to sign up for the world's if it is still possible. We don't want to bother anyone, or break any rules. We just want to know if they still have the possibility to enter. Since I can write some English, they asked me to help them.
Should I just tell them that there is no chance?
Thanks. Once again I apologize for not understanding what you are writing.

It seems to me that Kokkole's National Sanctioning body should have let their swimmers know when the deadline was. I just visited the FINA site and found that information on the site is available in Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai, I have no idea why there are not more options available.
I'm also sorry if I appeared disrespectful, that was not my intent, I was attempting to have a bit of fun with the confusion. Your questions reminded me of several of my swimmers, who allegedly have a decent command of our native tounge but also did not get the deadline concept.
I did get a bit tweaked at the Kokkole quote that follows from an earlier (June 10,2006) post: "The whole world doesn't read the USMS discussion forum... it's almost like an exclusive club is allowed to make entries past the official deadline."
I'm very secure in saying that no forum members got any slack on the entry deadline. BTW K's english looks and reads pretty well from here.
Hunter Thompson eh, you flatter me Peter!:p
See ya

So now you are saying that 9 days after the DEADLINE people can still enter the meet?!? That is so ridiculous!! That deadline has been posted since last year. If you can't get an entry in on time - you don't deserve to enter!! And why wait until the last minute? That on-line entry system was up in plenty of time. Stop complaining, finding excusing for your own neglect and play fair. Deadlines are set for everyone - these extensions are ridiculous.
Oh here we go again, another phony "fairness" debate. What's the harm to you or me if the Meet Committee let's a few more swimmers sign up? I think Michael has laid out pretty well why they're doing this. First, there was some confusion and delay getting the online entry system up such that some swimmers might not have made perfect entries perfectly on time. The Meet organizers made a decision that overall the "fairest" thing to do was give everyone one last clear chance to sign up. Second, the Meet organizers have made arrangements and incurred expenses on the assumption the number of entries will be in a certain range. As Michael pointed out the marginal cost and work required to run a few heats more is practically zero; however, the entry fees of those last few swimmers who sign up may be the difference between covering the costs of the meet, or not.
Most important, the Meet organizers are the ones with all the available information who USMS has trusted to run the meet. In case no one else noticed the stressed tone in Michael's posts, he and his folks are working their tails off to put on one of the biggest and most demanding meets in Masters Swimming. Issues like this are THEIR DECISION, as they should be. The rest of us would do well to avoid wasting their time by having to respond to kibitzing & kvetching that will have no other effect whatsoever.
Matt
Thank you everyone. Thank you Michael for the detailed information. I will pass it on.
Brian - I have removed the phrase that you found offensive. Thanks for your compliment about my English. I got my bachelor degree at UC Berkeley.
Due to the confusion of last minute entries, we realized that not everyone who wanted to enter was able to. If you were unable to complete an entry by 3 June, you may fax your entry to
