Had my 120 dollar Oakley's in my TYR goggle case stolen from my backpack while I was taking a shower tonight. The pool manager is going to check his camera DVR for the lobby and entryway to see if the crook was dumb enough to walk out with them exposed. God this makes me mad. The only positive thing about this is that I did not catch the guy in the act...I might be in the pokey right about now. You are all probably much wiser than me, since most of you are older( I'm 31) :p, but you've got to keep your stuff locked up ALL the time. Too lazy to earn something themselves so they take it from somebody else...wastes of precious oxygen IMHO.
Sorry for the rant but I just had to vent some frustratrion.

It is not nice to steal. I had lost some money when I was a kid and it was a team member who took my money. Our coach had someone hiding above some ventilation pipes and caught the culprit. He came from a very rich family and it was very disappointing. He was a great swimmer and had been my best friend in the club. He did not get kicked out of the club but his father paid back the money to everyone he stole from. We all accepted him back in the club. You have to be careful.
It seems everyone is getting ripped off these days. Ryk Neethling is in the news today for being ripped off at his home. The story is here: www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../11422.asp
scyfreestyler... glad you got your glasses back! And they look like nice ones too.
Running friends keep telling me they're worth the $ you pay but I tend to buy my sunglasses in drugstores and anywhere I find them cheap (recently got two pairs for $5 at a flea market!). But I also buy cheap umbrellas... after a $30 umbrella blew inside out during a heavy rainstorm and broke. :(
One day, after I'd finished a swim and some girls on the Y swim team had gone in for their practice, I noticed how few seemed all that worried about their belongings, leaving backpacks strewn on the floor of the locker room. One woman noticed a girl's ipod just lying on the floor. Fortunately, she was honest. She took it to the desk for safekeeping, leaving a note to that effect which she placed where the ipod had been left, so that the girl would know where it had been taken.
I've heard of locks getting broken at my Y, though, so I suppose the girls' strategy might actually, in a very weird way, make sense. Maybe they think the thieves will head for the lockers where the REALLY valuable stuff is. ;)
That is exactly what the swim kid teams do at our Y, including my daughter!
We did have a clever thief a couple of winters ago come in to the Y with bolt cutters. He would go through and steal all the pants in the lockers, which got him wallets. I felt bad one night because a father and his little 1 year old daughter had their pants stolen and it was freezing out. They eventually found the guy, but not before he did it 3 times. He had come down from Chicago after hitting Y's along the way with stolen passes.
My sunglasses are the ones I get free from ordering my contacts on-line! I have a whole stack of them at work on my desk. My husband came over to my desk one day complaining that his sunglasses were terrible. I opened my drawer and said, take your pick!
That bites, for sure! I know how you feel. I lost a watch--forgot it, really so that was my mistake, but I know if I'd found someone's watch, I'd turn it in at the desk, so really it hurts to have someone just think "finders keepers." And as George says, it's not always about needing money. Sometimes it's just "I want to get away with something."
Sorry to hear it happened to you. But I hope something much better comes your way to make up for what you lost.
Sorry,but I have a question.
What is an Oakley?
I never, ever bring anything of value in to swim with me. If they want my old suit(always bring an extra), or my ear plugs, or spare goggles, I guess they get those. Everything else is locked in the car during a swim.
Never been much for cheap sunglasses...I have tried the gas station specials a few times but in the last 8 years I have worn nothing but Ray Ban or Oakley. I like the style and I like the comfort of knowing my eyes are getting the best possible UV protection possible.
I can't imagine people busting locks at our gym...that would blow my mind. Justifiable homicide perhaps. ;) I always keep my iPod and wallet locked in my truck but who knows, that might be the next target. Anyhow, went and picked up my glasses, bought a lock at the snack bar, and went for a mile swim that felt better than any swim I've had in weeks. I'm smilin'! :D
This thread reminds me of the thread in which somebody was telling us about bringing a gun into the gym and locking it up in his/her locker. I can't imagine having a gun stolen...glasses were bad enough.
Yeah, well, I went to do a long set of 400m free (5x) the other day and found to my shock and chagrin that someone had stolen my stamina! An investigation showed that said stamina was last seen boarding a flight to Tuscany on a one way ticket...
