I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds.
I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.

I never really used to do much kick in my workouts. Now I try to do a "significant amount" of flutter kick w/ board after my initial warmups. I find if I wait till later in the workouts and then try to kick hard I end up cramping in my calves.
I used to have a hard time even doing 1:00s for 50 of kick, granted I wasn't putting that much effort into it.
Now I'm doing sets of 50s @ :55 holding :45s or so, and yesterday I did 10 @ :55, then 10 @ :50, also holding 45s.
I switch it up with distances as well: 75s, 100s, & 125s. My intervals are all starting to come down too. I know this is helping me when it comes to racing, though I'm don't purposely put the effort into my kick in a race.
You are right Ande. You know I agree about kicking. I did lots of it when I was younger. My knees started bothering me when I was in my twenties trying to compete in breaststroke. When I reached 60 I could barely walk. I have had two knee replacements and I have major problems pushing off walls. If I kick too hard I have trouble with knee clicking and get great pain walking. Very little kicking no pain.

Yeah. I've read most of this string and I have just now gotten started. And it really ain't pretty.
.34 25 yard kick with a board.
.72 50 yard kick with a board.
I go 1:18 for a scy 100 so you can see that I'm all upper body right now.
The women all laugh at me until we switch to pull buoys. Then I kill'em!
Ande, I've started practicing the SDK. I still need to have someone time me but it feels as though I'm slowing my turns down by using it. I know that this will change over time but that'e where I'm at.
I'll stert tomorow going w/o a board too.

Hey 3 Rivers!
Welcome to H.M.F.K.I.H!
If you do the training, you will become a faster kicker
for now, don't worry about your 50 speed or times
concentrate on improving your 12.5, 15, & 25 speed
get your 25 under 25 or 20 before working on 50's
Represent your times like this:
12/20/2011 25Y Flutter K WB :34; 50Y Flutter K WB :72
Get a water proof stop watch to time yourself to the 1/10th of a second,
though you should be dropping in chunks for a while.
keep working on your SDK, just do short bursts
like 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10 kicks
You can Kick faster faster
12/27 12.5Y Flutter K WB 14.1;
12/31 12.5Y Flutter K WB 13.1; 20Y Flutter K WB 16.1
1/4 12.5 Flutter K WB 10.4;
1/5 12.5 Flutter K WB 10.5
I've been doing double duty trying to get it down. I can't explain the drastic change from the 31st to the 4th but I was close to that time again today so I think it's legit.
The SDK is still horrible but I'll continue to work on it as well as kicking greater distances and going W/O the board.

1/8/12: 25Y Flutter K WB: 18.23; 25Y Flutter K on back: 24.05; 25Y fly swim: 13.90
PR in the kick with board and the fly swim. I got some TYR crossblades for christmas and have really enjoyed mixing them into workouts. I think they have worked well at letting me get aerobic kicking in...without fins I still have to kick very hard to be able to move so those are usually sprint or lactate sets.

way to go. 18.23 is a PB
How'd you do it? What helped the most?
