Help My Flutter Kick is Horrible!

I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds. I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.
  • kick 50's, 75's & 100's Ande I need to start timing 50's 75's, and 100's for kicking too. Is this a rhetorical question, or did you honestly wonder if you can use snorkels at meets?
  • Congratulations keep it up What do you need to do to kick faster? how much rest do you put between efforts? consider only testing 2 distances each time instead of all 4 how are you doing these again? board / no board suit how are you starting? kicking times 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 scy 01/24/10 :17.0, :37.6, 1:01.0, 1:26.8, push, stop watch 01/13/10 :17.1, :40.0, 1:06.1, 1:32.1, push, stop watch 12/31/09 :16.8, :38.2, 1:01.7, 1:26.8, push, stop watch 12/29/09 :17.0, :38.5, 1:01.3, 1:27.3, push, stop watch 12/26/09 :16.7, :38.2, 1:01.6, 1:30.1, push, stop watch 12/23/09 :17.x, :38.x, 1:03.x, 1:28.x, push, pace clock 12/22/09 :17.x, :39.x, 1:04.x, 1:30.x, push, pace clock 12/16/09 :18.x, :40.x, 1:03.x, 1:30.x, push, pace clock 12/09/09 :18.x, :40.x, 1:04.x, 1:33.x, push, pace clock
  • I agree there should be a dolphin kicking race.

Steve it is my thought why use some thing that you cannot use in a race. Same thing as my belief no kickboards, no fins no pull bouys, no paddles. I also believe they should not be allowed to use more then 3 dolpin kicks after a dive or turn. I may be alone in these beliefs. If they want to race dolphin kicks there should be a dolphin kicking race. I need to start timing 50's 75's, and 100's for kicking too. Is this a rhetorical question, or did you honestly wonder if you can use snorkels at meets?

thanks, been doing this order last few times: 100,25,75,50 swim easy between each until heart rate feels near normal. i do change the order sometimes but have trouble getting a fast time for the 100 if it is not done first. no board just streamline. no equipment for the 25 since no breath needed. snorkle for 25,75,100. i do flip at the wall. suit is a tyr poly jammer. time is with a finger mounted lap counter www.sportcount.com/featureChart.php i try to start as my feet leave the wall. i will try testing two at a time for a while.

thanks Ande, i'm also starting to see improvements in swimming freestyle from this kicking program, esp on sets of fast 25s or 50s. to answer your question i go streamlined from a push and time myself with a stopwatch. for 50yds and up i use a snorkle.
  • good job shane, you keep improving how are you doing these? from a push? board / no board? self timing / someone timing you?
  • great, keep it up you'll keep improving Anyone got any more results? today I kicked 50 yards from a dive with a board went 28.2 thanks Ande, i'm also starting to see improvements in swimming freestyle from this kicking program, esp on sets of fast 25s or 50s. to answer your question i go streamlined from a push and time myself with a stopwatch. for 50yds and up i use a snorkle.
