I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds.
I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.
I use a small timer that is worn on the finger.

Ande -
First off - congrats on the 200 IM - AMAZING!
Secondly - I've been doing 25 sprint kick down, and 25 easy back for my kick warmups during practice, and I've noticed a significant difference in speed already. I no longer use a kick board and I don't use any zoomers or fins as per your recommendation earlier in the thread. My question is do I do these kicks on my back to keep my feet mostly submerged in water? (So when I'm on my front its easier because I'm not fighting the water as much?) or do I stay on my belly to do them? (Or should I read more of the thread as this is possibly handled already?)

Ande, I videoed your 200IM, it was incredible to watch, you really turned on the kick turbins on the last 50!
I can post it if you wish.

Hey Steve, I beat you to it! :D I made a CD of the video I shot and gave it to him yesterday. BUT, your video may be (and probably is...) better than mine. I'm afraid Ande is going to have to turn down the volume when he watches mine, because I'm cheering for him and my voice can be heard. :D

I do a shallow belly flop dive off the side, the board doesn't go underwater, just skims the surface.

Ande, this might be a crazy redundant question but you did a dive start holding a kickboard, than kicked a 50y? Off a block? I've never seen that done...let me know, will have to try it.
Yes I've been working on my kick, and made some great improvements the past couple of months.
Shane: I like how you chartered and recorded your progress over several months, I am going to do this. Very motivational to see improvements mapped out like that.
today I kicked 50 yards from a dive with a board
went 28.2

Ande,
I thought I had replied to this, not sure what happened? Thanks for the link to your Kick Program.
I logged some kick FR this morning, SCM:
2 X 150 kick on 3:40 (went 3:10-ish)
4 X 50 kick on 1:15 (went 1:03/1:05)
4 X 25 kick sprint on :45 (went :25)
