In practicing body dolphin, no matter head or hand lead, how to KEEP your hips just below the surface AFTER clearing the surface? Our hips usually sink after clearing the surface, or before the next kick!! It still happen no matter we let the waistdown be trailed or do a small kick. Pls help. Thank you

Ray, Chill man. The whole idea of body dolphin is your hips are down when your shoulders are up, then you balance by pushing your shoulders down so your hips go up. Think about a roller coaster (or if you are mathematically inclined, a sine wave) where the surface of the water is about 1/4 of the way down from the top of the peaks. If you find your hips never really surface satisfactorily, just hold you chest down a split second longer. Check out these two articles by Emmett Hines at http://www.h2oustonswims.org/ Go to the "Articles" section. Then read "Slip-Slid'n Away" and "Vive le Papillon" in that order. If I were to take a wild shot in the dark about what your real issue is (knowing only what is in your previous post), I'd guess that you are having difficultly moving forward, at all, and you think it is because your hips are sinking too low. If so, your diagnosis of your problem is incorrect. A propulsive body dolphin is very hard to do when you are first starting, unless you use fins. You get hardly any positive feedback at all, which usually causes people to kick harder, and flex more than they should from their knees. Get a set of fins, and only do body dolphin with them on until you get the hang of it. Your next step will be to take them off and do the same body dolphin with your nekkid feet. But, only do this after you dial in the skill with fins on. Also, even after you can body dolphin satisfactorily with or without fins, it is still a good idea when you start your workout to use fins the first lap or two you body dolphin, then take them off for the rest of your body dolphining. Those first couple of laps will help you dial in the skill just the way you want it. Matt

Thank you, Matt S. Pls allow me to say more about our problem¡K. Excuse me, isn¡¦t the most ideal way of hip traveling to pop OUT of the surface then keep just BELOW the surface while doing body dolphin?! And YES, there is a problem with going forward¡K and our problem here is with no problem to let the hips clear the surface, but to let the hips keep just below the surface after popping out of the water. And I am getting confused if the pulse comes from the chest and ¡K we are asked to keep the upper back not too deep and NOT to downbeat at all and NOT to use the thigh muscle at all Any tips to make the travel looked like effortless yet still with efficiency??????? Thank you very much.

Ray T. Matt's ideas sound right to me. Very likely, your hips aren't really "sinking" so much as you might either be bending your knees too much or popping up your head. Get some red zoomers.
