Honestly, I don't know. The best advice is to contact someone in the university's athletic department who understands all the rules. They should be able to tell you definitively. The coach of the team can probably tell you who you should talk to.
Ok...let me make sure I have this right.......
I'm going to the a university in the fall that I've never been to before. I'll be taking classes for the first time. So then, that would count as one year of my eligibilty right? Meaning that I only have 3 more years to get on a team if that's what I wanted to do. But if I wanted to red-shirt this upcoming spring semester, then I would still have 4 more years that I could compete with the school. But if I did red-shirt this semester, then I would not be able to compete in any form of organized swimming. So basically, if I'm not ready to join the team in the spring (which I don't think I will be) talk to the coach about possibly red-shirting and getting ready for next season.
Is that right? or even close?
p.s. It is a Div. I school
I am under the impression that swimmers who transfer from one college they have swam for, to another college they want to swim for, are also redshirted for a year as a deterant, I remembering Betsy Mitchell in the 1980's did this from a southern college to U of Texas to swim under Richard Quick...

This is not redshirting. You do this and you sit a year AND lose that year of eligibility.
Kyra,
Talk with the coach and the NCAA compliance offices (all D1 schools have them).
I’m not sure I understand your scenario…
The factors that determine your eligibility are:
Your age,
When you graduate High school
The number of semesters you have attended any college
The numbers of years you participated in any varsity sport.

I'm going to e-mail the coach once I know for sure that I'm going to be able to go...I just wanted a good background knowledge.
As for the others...I'm 19, graduated in '04, been in college 2 semesters (at a different university from the one I'm going to with the team) and never played any varsity sports...high school or college. If that was need to know or helps at all....but I thought I'd say just in case. :p
I am not an NCAA compliance officer, but based on what you’re telling us, it looks like you have 4 years of eligibility (including the 2005-06 season). If you wait until next year (06-07 season) to start you will 3 years of eligibility. So, if the coach lets you join now, do it.
