Can someone explain to me redshirting on a sports team? I have a general jist, I think, but it's escaping my memory right now.

Ok...let me make sure I have this right....... I'm going to the a university in the fall that I've never been to before. I'll be taking classes for the first time. So then, that would count as one year of my eligibilty right? Meaning that I only have 3 more years to get on a team if that's what I wanted to do. But if I wanted to red-shirt this upcoming spring semester, then I would still have 4 more years that I could compete with the school. But if I did red-shirt this semester, then I would not be able to compete in any form of organized swimming. So basically, if I'm not ready to join the team in the spring (which I don't think I will be) talk to the coach about possibly red-shirting and getting ready for next season. Is that right? or even close? p.s. It is a Div. I school
