Can someone explain to me redshirting on a sports team? I have a general jist, I think, but it's escaping my memory right now.

I am under the impression that swimmers who transfer from one college they have swam for, to another college they want to swim for, are also redshirted for a year as a deterant, I remembering Betsy Mitchell in the 1980's did this from a southern college to U of Texas to swim under Richard Quick...
