Getting the motivation to swim daily...

Help! I'm trying to aquire the motivation to swim daily...well six days a week, one day of rest. I need to lose around 50 pounds by winter, but I still can't get myself in the pool. I don't know why. I guess a few reasons could be: (1) Social anxiety (2) People seeing how fat I am (3) Failing Can someone help me gain motivation to get into the pool so I can improve my life? Thanks! Best, Chris

If he starts beating you during a practice, wait until he finishes a set and right before the start of the next set, reach over (with that official doctor concerned look on your face) and take his pulse. Say something like "Do you know if FATAL silent heart disease runs in your family? - You know: the kind where your heart explodes under stress and pieces of it come out your mouth with great quantities of blood while you convulse and die horribly." When he gets wide-eyed and wants to know why you are asking, just mumble "Oh, nothing. Nevermind." while cocking your head in a disbelieving/quizical manner and then push off to start the next set. Years ago, I was in a training session (racewalking) with a guy who was the US record holder for 20k (and 3 time Olympian) and he was hurting me horribly. We were on a dirt road in Colorado that went through some fairly dark tunnels. I knew he was terrified of snakes and as we were about to enter the first tunnel, he was about 30 yards ahead of me and I yelled to him to be careful because snakes MIGHT be in the tunnel since it was a hot day and the tunnel was cool. He came back to me in a millisecond and let me lead the rest of the workout. -LBJ

Perhaps the confusion lies within yards vs. meters? A 25 yard pool isn't really regulation size (not to me anyway) as it's only 22.86 meters. Two laps would then leave you around 5 meters short and a little over 16 feet away from having swum 50 meters.

It is. And very relaxing. I tried again today to see if it was just some fluke. 28 seconds, but I did a flip turn. Best, Chris

I'd be interested to know how fast you could go from a proper start, but I'm guessing the pool you swim in doesn't have blocks / allow diving. Sad. But yeah, you should definitately get into masters / competitive swimming again, especially if you have some talent in an area. Although, you might want to consider getting your endurance up so you can swim longer distances with a team, I'd guess.

We have blocks, but only the swim team can use it. How is the time of 28 seconds? I'm only 18, isn't masters for 21 and up? Best, Chris

I'm not sure of the age requirment of various masters teams. There might be a competition age requirment....don't know. You could always swim at your college, but depending on where you're at that might require more work...different divisions and all.

28 seconds is terrific. I'm really curious what you would be swimming from a dive. Maybe when nobody is looking ....... ;) Well that's not what is important now anyhow. How many days have you been swimming now? I found that after about 3 weeks my endurrance really started picking up. I'm sure once you begin to see and feel a difference motivation will no longer be a problem. Great progress man, keep us updated.
