50 meters verses 25 yards or 25 meters

Question does any one feel the differance ,when switching from 25 yards or 25 meters , to 50 meters. do you get tired,or do you swim slower? Can you swim as far as you would in a 25 yard or meter pool , as you do in a 50 meter pool?:) :)

I just switched from the indoor 25 yd pool to the 50 meter outdoor pool (with a 3 week layoff). I've found that 50 meters is a little longer than 50 yards (because there's no turn) so your times may be a little slower as you're going a longer distance. You should do the conversion from yards to meters to try to get the same workout. I do about 1000 yards indoors and find that about 850-900 meters comes out about the same. My times for matching swims vary by about 10 seconds over 100 meters (longer) than the yards (shorter).

msgrupp. Thank you for the reply. I have one more problem, I mis judge the wall at 50 meters.:)

the little black marks on the bottom help! Once you learn how to judge how far the "T" is from the wall--you'll know where to start your turn (if you flip). I think there is a standard distance they are supposed to be from the wall so you just have to adjust your stroke count between the "Ts".

Thanks msgrupp. Will be looking for those marks on wed.
  • long course is harder and my training times are slower than my short course training times converted to LCM. like today I went 5:05 on a 400 LCM Free and this season I've been under 4:05 for a 400 free SCY more turns = more speed and more rest ande

Whenever you do a turn, there is a brief period of rest immediately afterward when you are streamlining. When you're swimming in a long course pool, that happens less than half as many times, so you get correspondingly less rest. But if your turns aren't done well, it's also possible for them to cost you energy instead of saving you energy. World record times set by elite swimmers in short course pools are slightly faster than those set in long course pools.

Bob. M. You are so right . I do not flip. But my turns are so so. Some time I catch the wall right , some time i reach for the wall. Some time i hit the wall straight up.:)

Ande. I really like the info on your swims. You give a lot of good info. But you are right , it does take longer to swim 50 meters than 25 yds. or 25 mtrs.;) :)
  • 50 Meters is about 5 yds. longer than 50 yds(10%.) Plus the turns make a huge difference, especially if you flip your turns or in breaststroke with the pullout. In a 200 yd breaststroke in SCY I take 40% fewer strokes than in 200 LCM(48 to 80.) taking more strokes is bound to make you more tired.
