I saw someone post this picture in r.s.s. Apparently, the guy was upset that he wasn't let in a pool in Czechoslovakia where he was visiting (he's from the U.S.) Have you seen these kind of signs elsewhere? Not that I'm against them, I'm perfectly fine wearing the "approved" attire. img240.exs.cx/.../261zo.jpg
  • I can answer this from 2 different viewpoints: #1 lifeguarding at a waterpark in Allentown, PA: there were major problems with guys wearing nearly 1/2 pants on slides that would get caught, hold up the ride, etc. They had a size limit for the length of shorts (can't offhand remember what it was), and no underwear could be showing above the waistband. #2: as a tourist in Europe and Japan: even at a water park (indoors) in The Netherlands, I went out with regular trunks on, was the only one there with them, so was glad I had my speedo on underneath. At several pools I went to in Japan the had rules about swimsuits like this, as well as requiring caps, I'm assuming for sanitary reasons.

What exactly is the benefit of not allowing beach shorts in a pool? To reduce the popularity of your pool and therefore reduce crowding?

Actually in Europe there's a totally different approach to wearing shorts and briefs. While briefs here in America might raise the question of you being gay(that is the stupidest thing I have ever encountered) in Europe you will most likely look as an "outsider" wearing shorts at the beach or ESPECIALLY in the pool, because the majority will wear briefs.it is just a cultural thing. Before I came to America from my native Russia I never wore shorts for swimming(open water or pool), because noone does!!!If you think about it, I think it makes sense - shorts are not for swimming... And it definitely does not make you gay overseas when you wear briefs...

Sounds like a bunch of crap. Actually it sounds like a bunch of communistic crap. I highly doubt that something like this would ever fly here in the states. What about men who weigh 400 pounds and can'f find a speedo to fit them? Surely they will file suit for discrimination.

NOOOO! Actually it sounds like a bunch of capitalist crap, so there.
  • lol, I can't say I've ever seen a sign like that! I bet there would be many people here in the U.S. that would just about have a heart attack if they saw something like that at a public pool!

Perhaps it has to do with people wearing shorts that are not exclusively used for swimming in the pool? Why wash your gym shorts when you can go for a swim instead kinda thing.
  • Considering this rule is from a deodorant optional continent, I place no credibility in either the fashion sense of man-thong rules or any attempt to suggest it is for hygeine purposes.

I would disagree on that. When you go to the pool here you won't see many guys with briefs. Most people here wear shorts whether they are "serious" swimmers, lap swimmers or just came for the Jaccuzi or the solarium. you will rather be an outsider with a brief or tight fitting shorts than with "normal" beach shorts. perhaps it's different where you come from. but I can definitly understand the saftey question about wearing shorts. I stuck up twice in a 50m long slide while wearing shorts and that's definitly not funny when the slide is a tube so nobody can see you are stuck. :D brgds matthias
