In another thread someone was talking about listening to a song to get you pumped up. I was just wondering what songs work for all of you?

Phelps was OutKast and Lenny was ColdPlay. I like both of those songs but I like to listen to DMX to get pumped up before swimming. Party up is one of my favorites.

I like "I hope you dance" too. But I have to say, one of the cutest things I've ever heard... granddaughter (I know, yawn) can really backstroke. After she set a pool record (she was 5 at the time)at a meet last year everyone started calling her Backstroke Baby, and writing that all over her with their Sharpies. Well, she likes to make up songs and she made up one called, what else, but Backstroke Baby to the tune of Luv Shack by the B52s. LOL, everytime she 'sings' it the lyrics change.

These are songs I try to play in my head before/during a workout (any order/any song will do): "Want You Bad" - The Offspring "I Fought The Law" - The Clash "Spanish Bombs" - The Clash "Begin the Begin" - R.E.M. "Badlands" - Bruce Springsteen "Elevation" - U2 "Where the Streets Have No Name" - U2 "Molinos" - Paperboys On the way to the pool I can listen to anything, as long as it's (a) fast, and (b) loud. Rock on. Adam

Walking Away a Winner - Kathy Mattea
  • "Float On," by Modest Mouse. For something like a 400 IM or a 500 free. The beat sets a good pace.

On my first ever Open Water swim down in KiwiLand, I found myself singing a sea shanty "I'm bound for South Australia" . (A tune our Celtic band played often). I had been singing this for a while when I laughed and thought, "I hope NOT, that's a very long way from here". During my long swims, I am always amazed at the songs I start singing. "I Can Swim 5,000 miles and I can swim 5,000miles...) "Slow Down you move too fast, got to make the swimming last ", "Mr Sun, Sun, Mr Golden Sun please shine down on me" if it is cold, . These and a whole array of others just pop in and I sing away with them. The spookiest was when I was hypothermic, I began singing "How Great Thou Art" - now where on earth did that come from I thought. No more than 4 minutes later, I was pulled from the race. I hear all sorts of music even full concertos, sonatas and other pieces either I have played or my children have played on piano and violin. Countless fiddle tunes, too many other styles of current songs spanning several eras keep me well entertained over the duration of the race. I do have a couple of favourites that keep my stroke rate and distance per stroke just right on pace that I use when feeling a bit tired. Works well for as a tune up and pick up the pace back to the usual metranome setting! So no particular tune, but each long distance swim, I look forward to what my radio station will play this time!!
