Swimming and your heart

A study reported in this month's Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that rats who previously swam six days weekly for seven weeks (90 min. sessions) had smaller scars and better heart function (compared to couch potato rats) when given an experimental heart attack. The article didn't mention whether they used kick boards, which are of course evil, but I believe they were unshaved.
  • I had a full blown experimental heart attack this morning during practice when our coach took out his apparent frustration over being up at 6 am and sick out on us.
  • Was the rat wearing a speedo or a jammer? Swimmy :)

Actually they ligated (tied off) one of the coronary arteries--it's hard to find obese chain-smoking rats who will suffer a heart attack "naturally."

And is a 90-minute swimming session for a rat the equivelant of a 90-minute session for a human? And it just reminds me of one of the things I have on my office wall, from "Everything I need to know I learned from Harry Potter", which is "if you make a better rat than human, don't boast". Kae

They actually made a bunch of rats into a Masters team?:p:o As for choice of attire, I think they had on a natural (and furry) full body suit. Does a rat get any additional propulsion from its tail? And did they compare early vs. late blooming rats? How about swimming rats vs. noodling rats? And didn't Tom do a similar experiment with a Moose and a clown? I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist.
