I was wondering if someone uses a product to help with dry mouth. I have tried drinking lots of water but that doesn't help except that I want to pee more. When I swim more than around 600 yards, my mouth is very dry. To the point that I start coughing. Now, what I do now is, I turn on my back (or breaststroke) and get my cough out and then turn back around, but from then on, I have to cough so much and I have to keep turning around (or breaststroke), it's not productive.

Is this a new problem? Perhaps it has something to do with the chlorine in the pool.

I take a water bottle with me and take a SIP (not a swig, not a gulp) of water each time I stop. (Too much water will get me bloated.) Even if I only am doing 50s and have 5 seconds in between. Sip on every stop. I swish it around before swallowing it. Moisten my whole mouth over and over throughout the workout. I drink 32 ounces over the course of a one-hour-plus workout. If I don't do this, my mouth gets dried out too.

It doesn't always happen so it's hard to say exactly what it is. I never really thought about if it was related to chlorine. I was thinking about trying a product like: www.orajel.com/.../gel.htm Originally posted by 330man Is this a new problem? Perhaps it has something to do with the chlorine in the pool.

I thought of this also, but I'm going to do a triathlon so I can't really carry a bottle with me :) Originally posted by Guvnah I take a water bottle with me and take a SIP (not a swig, not a gulp) of water each time I stop. I get pool water in my mouth every time I breathe. I don't know if I would have a problem with dry mouth were it not for this, but I suspect that I might. When I breathe I don't rotate my body/head out so far that my face is perpendicular to the water surface. Due to this, as I breathe in, water tends to flow in but is immediately expelled as I exhale when my face is once again underwater. Does this make sense to anybody but me?

Dry mouth is certainly a consequence of a badly balanced pool. This may not be an easy thing to confirm, since while I believe that most pool operators try to keep their pool in good shape, they are often not very willing to share their measurements of the pool condition, especially with the public. Also, it may be the case that while the pool Ph and chlorine levels are in the OK range, dry mouth can still occur - dry mouth was not a criteria for the establishment of these ranges. The worst case of dry mouth I ever had was in a normally well maintained pool. After workout and after brushing my teeth (I am not sure if it is related, I used a baking soda type paste) my skin started to peel from the inside of my mouth. I complained to my son about it, and he, not believing me, asked me what I meant. I dragged my finger inside my lip and showed him the mouth skin that then covered my finger. (That may be the grossest swimming story I have yet seen in this forum.) 330man - pool water is the cause of dry mouth, not the solution.

Hmmm... Maybe a tablespoon of honey before you work out? I don't know- maybe ask your chemist/pharmacist?

Hey... When I went to the shop today, I noticed a toothpaste made specifically for people suffering from dry mouth... It began with a 'B'.... Who knows, maybe it will help...
