I just started swimming a month and a half ago and all I do is freestyle for now.Well, I would love to throw in other strokes, but I do not know them yet.I want to try breaststroke next. Can anyone explain the general rules of the event, proper technique step by step, how to breathe, where to look, how to locate your hands when pulling, etc.I am in the darkest dark about the stroke, lol, and would like to start working on it with the proper technique. Thanks, Sorry if I ask too much right away, I understand there are a lot of details there.
  • To start off, maybe you should check out Wayne's site. I don't agree with everything he says, but the man clearly knows his breaststroke.

I recommend my article Curring Breaststroke Problems at my web site www.breaststroke.info/Breaststrokeproblems.htm I explain the secrets to breaststroke is looking down, and doing a quick pull, and then kick and glide with your head down and preferrably underwater, like Amanda Beard in the Olympics. If you can download PowerPoint, my American Swim Coaches presentation shows lots of secrets. Coach Wayne McCauley ASCA Level 5

This site has articles on breaststroke that you could start with: www.usms.org/.../technique.htm You can download videos of top swimmers that illustrate good technique: swim.ee/.../index_example.html A visit to your local library might also yield some good books with detailed instructions and illustrations or even instructional videos. If you are a USMS member you can rent instructional videos: www.usms.org/.../videos.shtml

Wayne, I have gone thru your article¡K www.breaststroke.info/Breaststrokeproblems.htm Could you please give me more expertise to my Q¡¦s below¡K 1. ¡§Tell your swimmers the water is harder at to surface, scull about 1 inch under the waters surface for the out-scull and 8-12 inches under for the in-sweep scull.¡¨ Q: So what should I do to move my hands from 8-12 inches under the surface to 1 inch under? 2. ¡§Once in a while I make them swim with their heads held up the way we used to swim back in the 60¡¦s and 70¡¦s.¡¨ Q: With hand lead? With or with NO sculling? 3. ¡§¡Kthen instantly explode down and backwards until the soles of the feet crash together.¡¨ Q: Do you mean ¡¥sole¡¦, instead of inner side of feet, say ankle? And at the very beginning of feet recovery, how do you point your toes EXACTLY outwards? Where should I twist, knees? (It seems you got to have great flexibility.) 4. ¡§The thumbs will be pointing to the bottom of the pool, **** the wrists so they are 40-45 degrees from being straight. We do lots of sculling drills, the swimmers soon learn they go much faster and easier with the wrists cocked instead of straight.¡¨ Q: **** wrist? Do you mean ¡¥bend¡¦ the wrist at 40-45 degrees? 5. ¡§The wave style uses the hands and forearms as "windshield wiper blades" using the hands and forearms together.¡¨ Q: Please give me more explanation thereto. 6. ¡§The flat style uses the hands to scoop out the inside of a large bowl.¡¨ Q: Does Amanda use flat style? It seems here hand and forearm are NOT straight. 7. ¡§The lower you keep your head while breathing the higher your hips will stay, thus making recovery of the legs with less resistance and more time into the streamline.¡¨ Q: So what is ¡¥cobra drill¡¦ for? I am getting confused. Sorry for so many Q¡¦s, I just tried to help my daughters to go be a happy breaststroker. Thank you so much.
  • This question has nothing to do with the original question, but I noticed that RayT was from Taiwan. I am moving to Taiwan in August and I was wondering if you could recommend a place to swim. I will be living somewhere in Taipei. Thanks

thinkersw1. Well, there are a lot of swimming pools in Taipei. As far as I know, there is a Swimming pool is very convenient for you to go swimming. If you take Mass Rapid Transportation system, or Metro Taipei, get off at Shilin Station, take exit 2, you will see it right next to this station. Hope this helps.
  • Thanks for the info., RayT. It is very helpful.
