Washing Suits

Since I've been out of the water, pretty much, for the last couple weeks and I'll be starting back up Monday I thought this would be a good time to throw my suit in the washer. Has anyone ever read the tag on their suit? I laughed when I read it "wash after every use in cold water." Come on now! Who's going to do that? I'm pretty sure I've owned suits that never saw the inside of a washing machine. Does anyone actually wash their suits regularly? Maybe I'm just gross :D

Suits for men are MUCH cheaper than suits for women. I handwash mine (with Woolite) every few wearings. Otherwise it gets rinsed in cool water (taken off in the shower) and line dried.
  • Originally posted by knelson I'm sure it will still wear out eventually, but it's sure been bomber so far. I've had a mesh suit for 3 years and it still looks and feels brand new. I've heard the elastic at the legs and the drawstring will wear out before the suit material.

I just soak it in laundry soap before I swim. You should see the bubbles. But really, no, I don't think I have ever washed any of my suits.

In high school, our team suits came from TYR, which, I'm sorry to say, is notorious for their untimely fading and stretching.....we used to take ours off in the shower and just use a little shampoo on them and sort of work the suits around....I guess that's as close to washing them as we ever got!
  • My workout suits are Tyr nylon suits. They last forever regardless of how you treat them. In blac, fading is less of a problem. My Fastskin suit is another matter.I rinse it after the meet in non-chlorinated water.(We have a well so that is easy, but I think that really prolongs suit life.)
  • I bought one of the TYR mesh polyester trainers like this one: www.kastawayswimwear.com/product.asp I bought it at SC Nationals in Indy and it still looks brand new. I'm really sold on the polyester suits now. It's amazing how durable they are. They just don't fade. I'm sure it will still wear out eventually, but it's sure been bomber so far.

I rinse mine while in the shower at the gym. When I get home to get into the house, I have to walk through the mud room where the washer is located, so I drop the suit in the washer and add some of the suit saver solution, but no soap. I've heard that soap and shampoo are bad for suits. I also stop the washer before it spins and squeeze the water out myself then hand it up to dry. Guess that qualifies for washing after every use. Someone on this board posted a 'homemade' suit saver solution awhile ago and I have lost it. Who ever it was could you please post it again. THANKS! Lainey

I don't know what I do wrong. I rinse my suits after every workout. If possible they last for about three months. When my fahter died in 1989, my stepmother told me that maybe I should get my suits from his junk drawer. These were suits from High School & age group. He had been saving them for over 15 yrs. Many of them looked like new. I used to have one suit a season back then. I think that Try are the worst. I really like Nike for practice. They don't seem to strecth out so badly.

Lainey I think they are made with sodium thiosulfate, a substance that broke chemical chlorine link. It can be found at pet stores, (used to dechlorinate water for aquariums) or school labs. Edit: Here's the balance equation : 2 Na2S2O3 (5 H2O) + Cl2 = 2 NaCl + Na2S4O6 = salt + sodium dithionate I think it can also be find at pool chemical suppliers.
