I'm pretty sure that IM order is fly, back, ***, free, but it's been so long since I've paid attention I'm not positive that's correct. Why does it seem that a lot of workouts have sets with reverse IM order? I mean does practicing in reverse order make you stronger or have more endurance?

Individual Medley. (Or where I live, Illinois Masters. :D) The order is correct: fly, back, ***, free.
If you are swimming on a medley relay, then each person does a different stroke, in this order: back, ***, fly, free.
Although there are IM relays (each person does an IM), if you read it in a newspaper, they almost certainly mean a medley relay.

You have the order right.
The reason they do it in reverse order is so that you can't kill the coach because your arms are dead from the fly after too much IM. :D

I've heard a lot of people call it "Butter-Back-***-free"
And couldn't remember the right order till I figured out... "Chicken Sandwich!"
Butter on the Back of the bread, chicken ***, and you're free to have Lunch. I know ... it's strange.

Because butterfly tends to be harder than the other strokes for most people, reverse IM gets used in sets so that you can finish hard, and so that you don't get too tired right in the middle of the swim.
In college we used to warm up sometimes with a reverse 800 IM. I think a regular 800 IM would have given us all shoulder injuries!
Swim fast.
