Goggles

About time for me to stock up on some goggles again. I've worn Swedes since high school but I'm looking for something that might be more robust - Swede straps start falling apart pretty quick and they aren't very fog resistant. Anything out there that's Swede-ish but a bit more sturdy? Or maybe I should just go to the swim shop and try some on... I need to go fit for a nicer tech suit for Nationals anyway, ain't spending money on something I might not be able to squeeze my thighs into.
  • I'm a swede lifer. I still wear them for practice and sometimes meets. Although the straps wear out fairly regularly, I think the cost makes up for it. I've worn two other types of goggles during competition: Vanquisher 2.0 and Fastskin 3.0. I only started wearing those because swedes don't stay on my face when I wear a cap, regardless of how tight I make them. I never wore a cap when I was younger, but I kept my hair much shorter and/or shaved it. I've never had goggles that did a great job with fog, these two included. The straps are certainly better on the Vanq and FS. But, I still like the swedes because my peripheral vision is the best in them.
  • Vanquisher 2.0 are my years long choice. I used to wear contacts and the swedes made the pop out sometimes.
  • That's funny, I think the MP and fancy Fastskin goggles and the like look hideous! I guess I'm kind of minimalist equipment-wise. Id be more than happy going to a championship meet with an FS1, new smoke tinted Swedes and a latex cap. I may just go with Swedes again, as a backstroker with an occasional problem swimming straight, any loss of peripheral vision can potentially be catastrophic :P

I like the Sporti Antifog Swedes in Amber, better than the original Swede because of the silicone padding and the antifog works pretty well, though I probably don’t swim as hard as you to really test its limits: www.swimoutlet.com/.../ The bungee cord it comes with isn’t very elastic. However with a more elastic bungee and the silicone, no leaking or mashing into eye socket to prevent leaks. The Vanquishers are nice but side visibility is not good; they have facets etched on the side of the lens. i think these look really cool but wow are they are expensive www.swimoutlet.com/.../

I have used the speed sockets for a while. I got the new 2.0 version in the spring. I found the gasket has worn out pretty quickly.

Oh, well I think they look nice on Michael Phelps... not a look for everyone and they wouldn’t work for me either.
  • The FINIS Dart is an excellent minimalist goggle. It's essentially swedes, but has silicone straps. Come in a teeny box ready to assemble.
