Practice suits for men

So I have seen where a lot guys practice in water polo suits. From what I gather they hold up really well to a lot of use. Is this common?
  • I have a Nike jammer of some sort. Seems to be made of some sort of indestructible fabric. I can't remember the model, but I think it's their analog/competitor to the Speedo Endurance Plus. I don't like it (seems to run large), but I'm too cheap to retire it and buy something else.
  • At the pool I swim at, I'm probably the only person (out of 15 men I regularly see) using water polo suits, and maybe one of four that wears briefs. They are made of dual-ply PBT/polyester (generally), so they're pretty hardy, though I doubt that practically they're any more hardy than a PBT/poly single-ply brief (e.g., Speedo Endurance or Tyr Durafast) and you're less likely to get the polo suits on discount. So if your thinking of using a polo suit from a economics/frugality point of view, they may not pencil out. I use polo suits just because they tend to have more interesting patterns than regular swim briefs, they typically sit lower on the hips so you don't emphasize your love handles, and I don't like the feeling of jammers on my thighs. So basically I use them for no good reason other than I like them. Polo suits do seem popular with high school and college swimmers I see at open water events.

Thanks. Do you find it easier to do/practice flip turns in briefs/polo suits verse jammers?

Thanks. I have a Nikki mesh trainer I picked up for 7 or 8.00. I have seen though where most wear a breif or polo suit under it and then at the last of the workout take off the mesh trainer and do some timed sprints. I have not done this myself. I was curious about the polo suit because I have heard that is great to wear when practicing flips and turns. Thought that if the material was suitable that it may a good option to wear under the mesh part of my work out then remove and practice flips and turms before ending with some sprints.
  • Stick with the polo suits for everything. Like handpaddles or swim fins, which you should not use all the time, alternate your days when you utilize your mesh trainer.
