W Vivian;274359]In the backstroke kick, should the knees bend or should the knees stay straight? I am trying to do a proper kick and for the life of me I cannot understand what I am to do.:)
As mentioned above, they do bend but not too much. Keep them relaxed and kick from the upper leg. Knees shouldn't break the surface of the water but the toes will
Sometimes you need to play with the upper body posistion to help avoid bending your knees too much in order to keep your feet horizontal in the water.
If someone were to watch you, they might suggest that you drop your shoulders back into the water a little more, and maybe you need to tilt your hips up towards the surface. Great ideas here, espeically posting a video so inquiing minds can offer more specific advice.

get one on one instructions where your instructor is in the water watching you kick
your instructor will give you a few pointers
attempt them get more feedback
learn what it feels like
get underwater video of you kicking backstroke
kick a fast 25 back for time
then train to improve it
