There was a different swimmer yesterday who completely dominated her heat in the 200 fly. I wondered at the time why she was in that heat in the first place and later I happened to find out the story. This was her first meet back after a major surgery and when she entered the meet, she had no idea that weeks later she would be able to go that fast. Perhaps the 200 free swimmer today was in a similar situation.
Fair enough, Bobinator. As you know, I am mostly quite positive on the forums. And, That Guy, that's terrific what that gal accomplished!
This, however, wasn't really about the swimmer and whether sandbagging is, as I said, 'good/bad/ugly'. This was about the commentator. I wouldn't have pointed out the 40 second difference between her slower seed time and her race time, just in case she did sandbag. I would have just said, "Great swim!" :2cents:

I don't know how much time you've been given to "beef up" on the competitors during your experiences as a commentator. I had the pleasure to do live commentating 5+ years for our high school state gymnastics meet here in Indiana. I really didn't have much information about each competitor so basically I aim to be positive about each athlete and try to make it a celebration based on the good things going on during the meet. I can't even imagine how difficult this would be in a National meet with multiple age divisions and athletes who are not famous. If you have a program or technique to filter information about each athlete quickly to the commentator you should probably volunteer to be the commentator for the next Nationals; I bet this is a difficult job to fill!

I would rather swim at the next Nationals! :D
Again, it isn't a matter of knowing a lot of information about each swimmer; it's a matter of saying less, not more. For all of the races, I would congratulate the winner on a "great swim" and make sure to praise them for any broken records. But, I would not point out a swimmer beating their 200 seed time by 40 seconds (or any seed time that is slaughtered by that much time), unless I knew the swimmer. To me, it is giving positive reinforcement where it may not have been due... If she really did do that much better than she thought she would do, "Great swim!" pretty much covers it anyway.

Good grief. The (very likely) unpaid announcer is there to entertain the crowd, right? As long as he/she isn't saying anything inappropriate/offensive, what's the problem? I'm sure he was just trying to make the race interesting.:bolt:
Nice job TG!!! I know you really were looking for that PNA time, but still a very solid swim. :applaud:
Thanks! I was tired by then and just happy to have a decent race.
THAT GUY: Please find me tomorrow and introduce yourself. I haven't gotten to meet you yet. I've been working at the merchandise table most of the time.
ANDE: We will be attending the forums get-together. I will email you.
Sorry I missed you, Jayhawk. Your 200 *** looked strong.

Oooookaaaayyy; I concede defeat on this issue! You all bring up good points, so I'll throw in the towel. :whiteflag:

Well if you come to Indy next spring I'll buy you a :chug: and perhaps we can find something else to argue about!
Note to the lady talking next to the livestreaming camera who asked if her voice was getting picked up by the microphone: Yes, we can hear you; I'm sorry you lost your cap. And, yes, you are "kind of loud". And, no, I don't recognize your laugh, but it is, ummm, distinctive. :bolt:
