  • OK, all you nutso butterfliers (Mr. Adams, this means you), here's the "Hersey Fly Challenge" for the LCM season -- swimswam.com/.../. Oddly enough, I did swim a 400 fly on Saturday. I did not know about Hersey's swim when I did it, but my time was similar - I went 4:50 from a pushoff versus Hersey's 4:40 from a dive. oh and i was swimming in short course yards

Got it! Maybe not LCM (since I don't get to swim in the summer), but I'll do a SCM version for sure. :) What do you mean "I don't get to swim in the summer" ? All the pools near you are closed?
  • I don't know how flyers can keep going. 'cause we don't worry about any of that "easy-speed" stuff. :D I just get going and hang on. You get in a rythem and keep going. As long as you don't stop, you're good. Find a breathing pattern, and stick to it. Simple enough. I did a 500 Fly back in college once, and went a 5:14, out at a 2:02 for the 200. As a master, I've done it 3 times now, and am down to a 5:58 with plans to drop even more.
  • in the early 80's SMU had a swimmer who used to swim fly in the 400 fr, think he went 4:20 something. Bill ??? maybe Billy Glasstetter I don't know how flyers can keep going.

  • Well --- I did a 1,000 yd. fly , but was not timed at practice.:D
  • What do you mean "I don't get to swim in the summer" ? All the pools near you are closed? No, they're open, but in my job career takes over in the summer. I'm a line mechanic for the largest apple and cherry producing company in the state of Washington, Stemilt Growers. The cherry season hits here around the 2nd week of June, and the way they have the fruit arranged here in the varying elevations, we run cherries hardcore until the end of August. The OT is good, but not much other time for activities other that trying to get dinner for the kids. :) My wife works for the same company, but on the swing shift. I'll be super tired and worn out from my 60-70 hour physical work days in coveralls running all around the line, in 100+ degree days. Yeah, I would LOVE to be able to swim, but life gets in the way at times. :) The good news is that my mother in law (who lives with us) is not going to work the cherries this summer, so I might actually get a chance to take a dip in the pool a few times a week this summer, which is way better than cold turkey for 2 months!!

I did a 500 fly in a high school duel meet a long time ago (5:29). Now, more than a 50 of fly and my shoulders will hurt for days.
