UT has fired JT today, after 23 years of leading the Vols. The AD gave the reason as "gross misconduct." www.swiminfo.com has the story. JT has coached Melvin Stewart, Jeremy Linn, Tripp Schwenk and others to olympic medals in his yeas as a coach.

Written like somebody who knows nothing about the man in question. Apparently you didn't know him as well as you thought you did.
  • As I think I've said I went to JT's swim camps at Mercersberg for a couple of summers when I was a kid, so I only know him a little. But from what I knew of him I thought the man walked on water. He was charismatic and motivating, and I learned a lot at his camps. . I too went to Mercersburg camps in 81, 82 and 83, usually for 2 weeks each summer, and have (had?) pretty much the same impressions as you. I was flabbergasted reading that article. We're all human, and I guess I put nothing past anyone, but I am truly shaken to the core, and I haven't see JT in 30 years.

Apparently you didn't know him as well as you thought you did. This is now the best post of the thread...
  • It's a beautiful day. It's great to be alive. Actually, it's "It is a beautiful day and it is great to be alive!". The start of every email from my coach.
  • People are not always who they appear to be. No one would have ever suspected that my AG coach was a child molester (not me, but a friend of mine. Even married her mom to get to her.) I think he is a despicable human being for what he did to her, however I also remember all of the wonderful things he did to foster my love of swimming, and the great team he built in the early 1980s. This is the human condition, good and bad. No one, no matter their accomplishments, is immune. In trying to digest events, people can recognize the same facts, but choose to see the glass as half-empty or half-full. Again, this is the human condition. To be sure, though, this is a devastating situation for many.
  • If true , why would such a man do something as stupid as this n the internet?????

My HS band director married one of my classmates as soon as she turned 18. 30 years later, he was convicted of an inappropriate relationship with a 15 year old girl. We have witnesses to him doing the same to my former classmate so this is a repeat offense. He was a great band director which took us to many titles and even a trip to Russia. As for a human, he was/is pathetic. Some people are addicted to the attention things like this give them. It's along the lines of alcohol addiction and has to be treated as such.

It's weird how these psychopaths can fit very well in our society I don't think you know what that word means.
  • yes, you are correct, tphe truth will probably never really surface accurately. But taking my response generally being (excuse me) off topic, evil does exist where you wouldn't expect it.
