Nekkedness...

I'm a board member for our swim club. Last nite there was mention of a complaint from a senior high school swimmer who was uncomfortable with using a locker room with the adult master swimmers. We practice at the same time a few days out of the week. This became an bigger issue last nite because we have a desire to run USA swimming at the same time as a few masters sessions in the evening and our coach voiced concern about everyone using the locker room at the same time and kids being uncomfortable. Does your club run practices at the same time? Have you run into issues like this? How did you handle/manage locker room time?
  • So yeah, there are perverts out there and now that I have my own children I can't say I'm the biggest fan of the "man up" solution. Yes, but this is a completely different matter--100% different than some prudish high schooler who's scarred from seeing a naked adult in a locker room. I;m always surprised to see how overly modest today's kids are...it cracks me up Kinda strange, isn't it? On the one hand you've got sexting, the availability of porn on the internet, etc., but on the other hand there's these kids who wrap a towel around themselves when changing in a locker room. Doesn't make sense to me.

Last nite there was mention of a complaint from a senior high school swimmer who was uncomfortable with using a locker room with the adult master swimmers. This kid is almost an adult himself. What is he going to do next year when he technically is an adult? Time to grow up.
  • For some reason, there seems to be an increasing and irrational trend toward “Gymnophobia” (fear of nudity) and Speedophobia (men's fear of wearing swimmer’s briefs or short running shorts). If he’s that uncomfortable with full or partial nudity in gyms, pools, locker rooms and showers, he should not be engaging in high school (or adult) athletics –especially swimming. When people bring up the acceptance of nudity in an athletic environment, there’s that old saying “It goes with the territory” and "If you don't like the heat, stay out of the kitchen". :bump: D2The very first full posting from Dolphin2 that I 100% agree with.
  • I think this is one of the best posts here, and I think the list at the bottom could be posted in almost every locker room. I swim with a masters team at the same time that kids groups swim, and many days we share the locker room. I'll wrap a towel around me whenever I can. To the poster who said to just wash, "down there," at another time...many of us go straight from swimming to work. In the average week I may shower at home just once or twice. If a swimming locker room raises complaints, I'd hate to see what this kid does when he goes to a real gym locker room. My gym is 18+ (16 w a parent), and some people just get crazy with walking around naked in the locker room. As others have said, I do what I need to do and get out of there. Does your club run practices at the same time? sometimes Have you run into issues like this? not that I know of How did you handle/manage locker room time? WARNING: there are naked people in locker rooms most older swimmers walk around in the buff care free while most younger swimmers and some masters (who might have had prudish moms or modesty issues, just a theory) wrap a towel around their waist when they put on their suits or take them off Inappropriate Locker room Behavior's are: 1) Touching, (others or self) 2) Shooting pictures or video, (don't take out your cell phones) 3) Standing too close, 4) Staring, and 5) inappropriate conversation (direct or indirect) The masters tend to talk with their friends and ignore age group swimmers and vice versa. If kids are really modest they can change in a stall. Plus we can all choose to look the other way.

I am forty-four and it is not really about modesty. It's a gym, not a nudist colony. I don't want to see your hairy, flabby, naked body strutting around and certainly not doing naked calisthenics in the locker area. Do your thing, get dressed and move on. Also, now days with most phones having photo and even movie capability, you probably do not want yourself doing naked zumba in the locker room posted on the Internet.

If he’s the kind of person who's extremely uncomfortable with wearing abbreviated clothing, full or partial nudity in pools, locker rooms, and showers, he should not be engaging in high school (or adult) athletics –especially swimming which is a very "Gym" activity. When people bring up the subject of what's acceptable for the minimal amount of body coverage (and nudity) in an athletic environment, my comment is the old saying “It goes with the territory” and "If you don't like the heat, stay out of the kitchen". :bump: D2

  • I was there from about age 9-12 and only found out years later what was actually going on there. So you're saying they really were creepy? You're right then--I probably don't behave exactly like them. :bolt:
  • In our locker room there are 5 bays of lockers with a bench down the middle of each bay. The gym has reserved the last bay as "adults only". I don't think it's due to modesty but because one HS team tends to leave their swim bags on the floors of all the bays so this gave 1 bay bag-free. Other than that, there haven't been any issues. Oh we did have a teen age couple go in to the family changing room together and got caught on camera (which is outside the room). We were then told none of us were allowed in the family changing rooms. Sorry, I'm an adult, I'm going in there at 4am when no one else is around.

Ditto to seahare. Some people in our locker room would stand in the aisle, where everyone else has to pass by--or squeeze by--completely naked chatting with someone else (who's covered) for some ten minutes. I have actually personally caught someone peeping from behind the locker at another before the latter got dressed up, who, upon being caught by surprise, gave some coughs and left.
