I'm a board member for our swim club.
Last nite there was mention of a complaint from a senior high school swimmer who was uncomfortable with using a locker room with the adult master swimmers. We practice at the same time a few days out of the week.
This became an bigger issue last nite because we have a desire to run USA swimming at the same time as a few masters sessions in the evening and our coach voiced concern about everyone using the locker room at the same time and kids being uncomfortable.
Does your club run practices at the same time?
Have you run into issues like this?
How did you handle/manage locker room time?

I do remember when I was in high school and we used to do morning workouts in the summer at Michigan State University we always commented about the "creepy old guys" in the locker room walking around naked. Thinking back these creepy old guys were just behaving exactly as I tend to now!
I hope you aren't behaving exactly like that...
I think that for any kid that experienced that locker room then either nothing will ever again phase them or they will be scarred for life. I am in the latter group. I don't know, maybe they closed the sauna down by the time you were there. I was there from about age 9-12 and only found out years later what was actually going on there.
So you're saying they really were creepy? You're right then--I probably don't behave exactly like them. :bolt:
Perhaps it is urban myth but I don't think so. I was too young and naive to have a clue at the time.
I think there might have been a sting operation or something but I just searched and couldn't find anything about it. But the first hit I got on google is enough to re-enforce my kind of thinking.
It's true that younger guys tend to cover up in the locker room and older guys don't. But there's a middle generation that brings their little kids into the men's locker room, and I mean not just little boys but little girls anywhere from two to six years old. Am I supposed to cover up because there is a four year old girl (or boy?) in the men's locker room?
I feel like my generation and below (20 yrs old) is much more modest with all of the teachings of sexual harassment and pedophiles and such.
EJB,
This is the best explanation I have heard on this. Makes sense.
Up till now on this thread, my response has been, get over it! Well, that is still my response, but at least I understand where the modesty is coming from.
This from a guy who would cause a NOMA!!:D
This reminds me of sauna issues. In europe, saunas are coed and absolutely no bathing suits allowed. towels, however; must be used to sit on benches. b/c I have lived in Europe and in the USA, if i'm in Europe i go with what they do, if i am here, i go with what is done here, depending on pool or team I am swimming with. Most Y's , have adult and kid locker rooms. I have even seen Masters Swimmers (women) deck change at Ynats from a tech suit. wish i could learn that trick.
To each his own.

There is a NOWA who sits in our sauna naked every morning around 6am. The sauna is in the women's locker room only so only us females see her but - ewwww. I don't go in that sauna for fear of what that NOWA is leaving behind.
My local pool has 4 changing rooms. 1 Mens, 1 Womans, 1 Boys, 1 Girls. The Men's changing room is quite fancy and full of naked old men. The Boy's changing room is pretty plain and has much more modest people.

My pool in high school also had the 4 changing rooms. If some old, wrinkly, sagging, man happened to walk in of a shower the boys locker room someone would say NOMA. Naked Old Man Alert.
most older swimmers walk around in the buff care free while
most younger swimmers and some masters (who might have had prudish moms or modesty issues, just a theory)
wrap a towel around their waist when they put on their suits or take them off
Most of the adults I see doing a deck change are the ones who let their 8-year-old boys run around the ladies locker room. AAAAARRRRGHHH! (Maybe that one belongs in the swim rant thread.)
Coincidentally, I was just googling ocean beach temperatures in Vancouver and came across a notice that as of June 2011, topless bathing is legal on all Vancouver beaches.
Vancouver, WA or B.C.???
