Nekkedness...

I'm a board member for our swim club. Last nite there was mention of a complaint from a senior high school swimmer who was uncomfortable with using a locker room with the adult master swimmers. We practice at the same time a few days out of the week. This became an bigger issue last nite because we have a desire to run USA swimming at the same time as a few masters sessions in the evening and our coach voiced concern about everyone using the locker room at the same time and kids being uncomfortable. Does your club run practices at the same time? Have you run into issues like this? How did you handle/manage locker room time?
  • Some idiot was doing naked deep knee bends in the locker room this morning. He was probably creepy and old, but I was doing my best not to look. :afraid:
  • I train with age groupers and there are a couple instances where other masters swimmers train with us as well. As far as I know, there have never been any complaints. Then again, I don't walk around naked... The kids definitely do things differently. Most (masters) swimmers I know remove their suit while showering to rinse it out. The kids never do this. They just don't walk around the locker room naked like masters swimmers seem to have little problem with. This is the prevailing theme of changing every place I have been. I am part of the next generation that stays covered up and prefers others do as well. My deck changing technique is how I change in a locker room. I don't really care if people want to walk around naked, but I do think it's a little bit weird. In this day and age, swimsuits last a long time and washing them out doesn't do anything anyways. And can't everyone wash those hard to get places another time? :afraid: To me, it makes no difference if a guy exposes himself on the street or in a locker room...I don't care to see it either way. I agree that the kid should just man up.

WARNING: there are naked people in locker rooms most older swimmers walk around in the buff care free while most younger swimmers and some masters (who might have had prudish moms or modesty issues, just a theory) wrap a towel around their waist when they put on their suits or take them off Inappropriate Locker room Behavior's are: 1) Touching, (others or self) 2) Shooting pictures or video, (don't take out your cell phones) 3) Standing too close, 4) Staring, and 5) inappropriate conversation (direct or indirect) The masters tend to talk with their friends and ignore age group swimmers and vice versa. If kids are really modest they can change in a stall. Plus we can all choose to look the other way.
  • but I don't feel comfortable changing in front of even 3-4 year old little boys. Mostly because you never know how their mothers will react, as on occasion they have complained about less. That would be great. They take their child into the opposite sex dressing room and then complain about someone being naked in there. Men bring their young daughters into the changing room all the time at my pool and I've got no qualms about taking my suit off. I don't feel I should need to alter my behavior because they are in there. If it's a big concern for the parent they should get the kid into their swimsuit at home and drive them home wet afterward.

What an odd complaint, especially having come from a high school kid. We run our kids practices at the same time as aqua aerobics and some adult swim lessons. I've never heard any complaints before, but even if I did I'm not sure that it would warrant any scheduling changes.

Some over the pond here! We swim with the age groupers and masters tend to derobe to shower, whereas the youngsters won't. Of our masters swimmers most are parents, two are coaches and I'm the male welfare officer and a parent. My son despairs a bit, but as we used to say when I played rugby 'seen one, you've seen them all'. I understand that youngsters are more self conscious, which is why we have cubicles for them if they want to use them.

I haven't heard of any formal issues at our pool as the masters and the age group team times overlap, but I do know that my teenaged son and his teammates joke about the "naked old men" (the 40 & 50 somethings! :afraid:) in the locker room. I think it's more an amused reaction than it is anything else. It's a locker room... come on. As long as there's nothing inappropriate going on, people need to lighten up. That being said, I do deck change in the locker room and I am still in my 40s -- which I hesitate to consider old. :) Mostly because our masters group swims at noon, which is the same time as many of the preschool lessons. There is a sign up that says that children 5 and over should use the locker rooms of their gender (which isn't always followed), but I don't feel comfortable changing in front of even 3-4 year old little boys. Mostly because you never know how their mothers will react, as on occasion they have complained about less.
  • I practice with an age group team and change in the locker room with the girls every practice. There haven't been any issues. The girls are very modest and will stay covered up a lot. Ours is a large pool, though and there will be naked older women who walk around. We just ignore them.
  • This is an interesting topic, I like to hear how everyone feels about this subject. If I'm in a locker room or bay alone I do little to nothing to protect my modesty (or lack there-of). If there are teen-agers or kids younger I try to cover as much as possible with my towel. I don't go to extreme lengths but I cover as much as I reasonably can without being a contortionist. I have never felt like the teens pay any attention at all. I will say that children 5 and younger tend to stand and stare in locker rooms. I teach at a kindergarten-5th grade elementary school and I would feel very awkward if a kindergartner got a glimpse of me in the buff.
